Designed to be different

Working within the footprint of what was previously part of an historic magistrates’ court in London, we designed an all-day restaurant for guests from the associated Dixon Hotel and a new dining and social hub for local people.

intentionally breaks away from the aesthetic of the hotel to take

its cues from mid-century design and Bauhaus curves. Traditional terrazzo to the counter tops is paired with a contemporary take in the tabletops and an homage to British designer, Sir Kenneth Grange, has been woven into the narrative by way of an exhibition of his original sketches.

Using a pastel colour palette, we created a relaxed and fresh Miami-beach-inspired ambience. White metro-style tiles and birched timber used for the veneers, as well as a playful combination of colourful matte and gloss finishes on the ceiling achieve a positive vibe, while two former holding cells have been re-purposed as rooms where coffee beans are now roasted. A black terrazzo grid integrated into the timber floor delineates the location of the old cells, a subtle reminder of the past.
