Wall Unit, Manhattan Apartment

The open Family room required a center wall piece to anchor the space and accommodate integration of audio-visual equipment. While initially exploring options for a more closed wall unit with numerous sliding doors, the client settled on an open and clean built-in wall unit with an asymmetric design that relates to the space, furniture plan, and makes a design statement in the apartment.

The low counter height with storage beneath sets up the room for a more intimate scale and promotes an inviting and tailored casual atmosphere whether lounging on the L-shaped sofa or spreading out on the soft custom area rug. The jazzy design composition of cantilevered counters and shelves with lacquer paneling backdrop gives a lightness to the design, and allows for an evolving display of decorative art objects and simple flower arrangements.

The wall unit was designed using the white lacquer panel component introduced to the apartment as a finish element to create luminance in selected spaces throughout the apartment. The paneling module and vertical reveal system is continued on the flush built-in drawers below the counters.

The vertical wall paneling is differentiated in a white lacquer satin finish whereas the horizontal shelves and protruding surface elements of the wall unit are finished in a high gloss white lacquer, a more durable finish, that holds up well with use.
