2232 Bush Street is a curious building – a classic SoMa warehouse that somehow got built in Pacific Heights. The combination turned out to be perfect for our client Charles Phan. We worked with Charles to convert the structure into a residential loft and ground-floor restaurant. An outpost of his venerable classic Slanted Door, Out the Door, reminds many patrons of the original restaurant as it existed in the Mission District.
OTD is clean and simple, but not at the expense of lacking character. The classic material palette and variety of seating options make it a dynamic setting, appropriate for almost any occasion. The linear dining space is anchored by custom steel benches that sit along the main wall. Across the way, patrons can dine at the bar while overlooking the bustling open kitchen. White Carrara countertops and tables give the impression of floating planes above the restaurant’s black slate floors. A large communal table sits at the storefront entry allowing passersby to peek in, and in the best case, join in the lively atmosphere.
Some homage is given to the Slanted Door in the space’s color scheme. Pine panels line the walls referencing SD’s cypress slab tables. Slate wall tiles, installed groove-side-out, mimic SD’s seafoam-green walls. Of course, the unique touches are our favorite. We also designed OTD’s custom wine dispensing system, used for their innovative bulk wine program. A much-loved detail is the chandelier over the communal table – fabricated in our shop from one-half of a ship’s buoy (complete with adhered oyster shells).
