Combining the rich history of Mount Vernon with fresh and approachable design, ai3 reshaped this 170-room hotel to reflect its unique neighborhood story. Acknowledged as Baltimore’s cultural hub, Mount Vernon is now a thriving and eclectic residential community. The historic structure that houses the hotel is a 10-story neoclassical building that was once Baltimore’s first YMCA. ai3’s design plan called for a comprehensive overhaul of the space, infusing the hotel with the same quirky personality as the neighborhood in which it lives, while respectfully preserving its historic charm. Adorned with touches like antique brass tacks and ornate turned wooden leg details, the hotel’s public spaces are comfortably plush and reminiscent of wealthy 19th century culture clubs. Traditional detailing on the backdrop of the bold, oversized ceiling murals reference the colonial architecture of the area while staying true to the modern charisma of the Hotel Indigo brand.
