Tower Square at 675 West Peachtree

HGOR led the landscape architecture design for 675 West Peachtree, a 40,000 SF plaza anchoring the former AT&T building in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia. The tower base and accompanying high-rise, completed in the late 70s, embodied harsh design elements that created an architectural entry piece rather than a functional gateway amenity. Bleak hardscape overpowered the site and failed to offer a distinct use to the public realm, resulting in over 35 years of under-utilization of Midtown Atlanta’s largest outdoor space. The goal for the project was to develop a multi-functional TOD, allowing social engagement and value to the real estate.

PLAZA PROGRAMMING

The redesigned central space provides opportunities to market entertainment revenue-generating events while supporting plaza-level retail and dining establishments. The plaza offers Tower Square employees quick access to a work-play environment in a natural setting within downtown Atlanta - a tangible amenity for the 1.4 million SF office complex.

Shade was introduced in the form of a 37-foot-high signature trellis and groves of trees. Dining patios and an 8,000 SF biophilic seating panel initiate experiential activities and offer respite from the surrounding high-traffic area. The entire plaza was brought up to building elevation over an active transit line to maximize the site’s usability, cancel street noise and optimize views and sightlines. Since the Spring of 2020, 675 West Peachtree has enriched the existing site with a new value proposition founded on public / private and mixed-use functionality, intrinsically increasing the project’s breadth of impact. It has been the catalyst for transforming West Peachtree Street, reinvigorating Atlanta’s Midtown community.

DESIGN PROCESS

A key component for designing the exterior of Tower Square at 675 W Peachtree was to create a versatile space that maximized the potential for usable square footage.

The diagram to the right shows an analysis during the planning process of existing site zones, compared to how implementing plans developed for longevity provides a meaningful area for respite, connectivity and social engagement.
