Catskills lake house

Project description:

The design for this single family home on a reservoir lake in the Catskills region of New York State evolved from a few simple parameters. The home needed the maximum number of rooms with lakefront views, and is limited to a side and rear setbacks, locking in its width and volume. Further, with its wide frontage, the massing needed to be broken down to create multiple pitched roofs without creating a broad ‘chalet’ gable effect. With a desire to create a series of dramatic spaces framing the lake view, a diagram emerged of a T-shaped atrium that organizes the three separate volumes of the house. The long leg of the ‘T’ forms the entry axis and creates a triple height space that frames the lake view. The perpendicular axis of the ‘T’ contains the stairs and further subdivides the space. The main living room space then steps down to create more expansive views towards the lake.
