Quayside building, Amsterdam

At the entrance to the IJburglaan on the Steigereiland in IJburg, Amsterdam, the 200 metre long, five-storey quayside building has taken shape. The base plinth offers space for commercial business premises, above which are dwellings. The street side of the building presents a solid metropolitan image. Standing on a powerful base of dark concrete buttresses, it looks out over the harbour environment and the mooring posts in the water. The superstructure is lighter and more transparent, reaching up into the air. The archways in the building guide the path to the waterside, where the building presents a lighter side of white frames around light-grey façade elements to the water and a broad horizon. Thus, on this side, the colossus also fits in with the surroundings and backdrop of housing along on the water.
