Description

Flexibilty of construction, structure and function are essential points to ensure the longevity of a building.

The developed modular timber construction system responds directly to the challenges of the climate crisis. Throughout its lifecycle, it requires significantly less material (sufficiency), combines material-appropriate construction methods with an innovative energy system and rational floor plans (efficiency), and creates durable, flexible spatial structures and building components (consistency).

The flexibility of the structure is ensured through an open load-bearing system and demountable components. This allows for future adaptations over the building’s lifespan while avoiding waste that would otherwise result from modifications. Balconies, terraces, and external access elements are designed as self-supporting structures, making them structurally independent. This enables efficient construction sequences and consistent design principles.

At the heart of the project lies the choice of materials and construction methods, which go far beyond purely functional considerations. Timber, used as the primary structural element, represents a new approach to urban construction: sustainable, climate-conscious, and at the same time atmospherically warm.

The buildings follow a clear, modular grid that is not only economically efficient but also conveys architectural clarity and visual calm. Exposed timber façades, natural materials, and the combination of solid construction on the ground floor with lightweight timber construction on the upper levels result in a harmonious and understated overall aesthetic.

This use of timber extends beyond the exterior: it also contributes to a pleasant and healthy indoor living environment—shaped by warm materials, a good indoor climate, and well-considered layouts. Green roofs, pergolas, and trellises enhance the concept further, adding both ecological and emotional value.

The designed modular system can be applied to various site configurations in a heterogeneous city like Vienna. In this competition, the modular approach was implemented for plots in the 22nd district—Naufahrtweg and Aspernstraße—as well as in the 21st district at Orasteig II. These examples demonstrate how different building sizes—XS, S, M, L, and XL—can function within the system.
