Riverwalk Point
Roosevelt Island, NY
Design
Located on Roosevelt Island’s East
River waterfront, Riverwalk Point provides a valuable public amenity along the
island’s eastern bank, as well as distinctive private gardens for the
building’s residents. A central lawn offers room for free play and lounging,
while gabion seat-walls create intimate niches for smaller gatherings and
picnics. A waterfront path, lined with Red Osier Dogwood hedges, is punctuated
by meadows, structural evergreens, and groves of flowering trees that provide visual
focal points in the landscape and filter views toward the water. The funky tot playground—distinct with its colorful rubber surface
pattern and playful forms—is setback
from the water’s edge in the shade of an existing grove of London Plane trees.
On the building’s roof, a series of geometric planting islands create distinct
zones of programming for sun-bathing, lounging, dining, and cooking. Lush
planting and specimen trees create intimate rooms that offer shade while
framing the exemplary views of the East River and Midtown Manhattan.
