2022 TIDA – International Kitchen of the Year

Strong family bonds and the importance of entertaining were catalysts for many of the design decisions taken to deliver this striking new kitchen.

With three teenage children in the family, the kitchen space would be used at various times of the day and night and needed to suit the ever-changing schedules of young adolescents.

A matched sense of generosity of scale and elevated detailing

Reflective of the immersive and layered complexities of Melbourne as a city and of a rich connection to family, FJ House pulls together strong heritage bonds with a sense of place. Generous yet tightly bound through purposeful insertions, the home reflects an elevated luxury, celebrating warmth, tactility and local craftspeople.

Uniquely private, and disconnected from the streetscape, FJ House feels openly flowing within with the interior crafted as a place of refuge and one that connects. As a collaborative effort, a close working relationship between the impassioned client and the interior design team from the beginning ensured a more intuitive understanding of personalities and the resulting outcomes. Through this engaged process, the resolution of detailing of architectural elements then flows throughout.

Cultural imperative

This kitchen oozes sophistication and sits seamlessly in this interior. The form of the island bench is spectacular while being functional.

Dark stained timber, natural marble and brass highlights is a timeless mix, and this designer has achieved a perfect balance of form and function.

There was a conscientious call to action for family physical & emotional connectivity from the parents for their three teenage children – in that they would all be in and out of the kitchen space at various times of the day and night, to suit the ever-changing schedules of young adolescents and family dynamics.
