This 420sm conversion and extension of a Victorian terraced family house is in the Wandsworth Common conservation area of south London. The 90sqm garden pavilion forms a living and dining area that opens onto a 200 foot garden.

The idea was to create an architecture of lightness and immateriality that rests lightly against the existing Victorian structure. This lightness is expressed through a single thin planar skin of brass that is cut and folded to form roof, columns, walls, porticos, light reflectors and benches.

The resulting L-shaped glazed enclosure creates a courtyard between the existing house and new extension allowing the pavilion to act as a filter for viewing the garden. Fully retractable glazing allows two facades of the dining area to be fully opened to the garden.

The 3-storey side extension replaces an existing coach house – its addition allows a reconfiguration of the internal spaces of the house to integrate the house more fully with the garden as well as providing a more usable living space.
