Cultural Tracing; United in one source, divided into two Paths
Cultural tracing refers to exploring the origin and evolution of culture by retracing historical contexts. As one of the hot topics in today’s cultural field, it has been examined from an architectural perspective in the project practice of Hefei Art Museum. We thus propose an architectural embodiment of cultural tracing—namely,“Cultural Origin Shaping”, which means forging the prototype of Hefei’s cultural context in the form of an urban sculpture.

As stated inErya·Shui Shi (Explaining Waters):“When different streams flow from a single source, it is called ‘fei’.”Hefei derives its name precisely from this fact—the East Fei River and South Fei River originate here, unifying into one source and branching into two paths.Accordingly, the design adopts two centrally symmetrical multi-curved volumes intersecting and overlapping, so as to visualize the vivid imagery of the two rivers converging and sharing a common origin. The upturned, interlaced curved surfaces of the art museum’s roof resemble a frozen white spray, which rests just perfectly on the shore of Swan Lake.

Reconciling Diversity with Universality: The Integrated Design of Form, Space and Structure

In this practice, the integrated design of form, space and structure was our pursuit. Four concrete cylinders serve as the structural cores, which not only define the exhibition space, but also shape fluid public spaces—canyon-like corridors and an atrium located atthe “convergence hub”. Combined with two major space-structure highlights—the main entrance bridge truss and the large-scale suspended spiral staircase (with a radius of approximately 6.12 meters and suspended by 8 steel cables, its unique structural challenge is rarely seen in China)—a“complex multi-layer structural system composed of a variety of structural components”is thus formed.

Flowing Light and Wandering Shadows: The Art of Perception in Spatiotemporal Drift

We focus on spatial fluidity because it facilitates the flow of people, the flow of sightlines, and the flow of light and shadows. These elements constitute the core of dynamic spatial perception, and they share the same essence as the interaction between humans and artworks. Thus, the entire public space itself can be regarded as a work of art, where visitors witness ever-changing views with each step and discover unique beauty from different angles. This is the architect’s vision: to inspire the public to engage in independent aesthetic exploration and discovery through design.

Translation: Contemporary Expressions of Traditional Crafts
The contemporary translation of traditional cultural context. From the very beginning of the design process, we researched the traditional arts and crafts of Hefei. Two art forms in particular—Branded GourdsandWushan Iron Calligraphy—served as great sources of inspiration. We aimed to “translate” these traditional crafts into the design through a process of creative reinterpretation.

“Sweet Osmanthus”Bas-Relief UHPC Curtain Wall-Branded Gourds involves creating bas-relief-like patterns on gourds using a heated iron. Inspired by this craft, we designed a set of sweet osmanthus bas-relief UHPC curtain walls, taking Hefei’s city flower—the sweet osmanthus—as the motif. The design fully leverages the high-strength properties of this new material: each UHPC panel measures 2.4m × 6.0m and can be directly connected between the upper and lower floor slabs without the need for keel supports. Each panel features 10 square grids (1.2m × 1.2m each), with interwoven four-hole osmanthus patterns. From a distance, the panels present a striking rhythm of solid and void; up close, they showcase surface textures and details reminiscent of layered rock formations and stone carvings. In terms of lighting design, LED point light sources are embedded in the lower inner side of the hollowed osmanthus patterns. Combined with the parametrically designed gradient effect of solid and void on the facade, this setup creates an elegant artistic atmosphere—resembling twinkling stars from afar and branches heavy with golden osmanthus blossoms up close.

“Chaohu Lake Golden Ripples” Copper Scroll Curtain Wall-Wushan Iron Calligraphy is a metal forging craft where a hammer serves as the brush and iron as the ink. Drawing on this forging technique, we created 9,286 copper scrolls in three different sizes (each 300mm in height and 500–600mm in length). Through pixelated arrangement, these scrolls form an abstract representation of the rolling waves depicted in Shi Tao’s Chaohu Lake Painting, constructing a magnificent “Chaohu Lake Golden Ripples” copper scroll mural on the east facade facing the main road. Each copper scroll module is curved into a U-shape in the horizontal plane. The direction of the opening and the curvature of the scrolls create subtle parallax effects with shifting light and shadow as the viewing angle changes, resulting in a dynamic image of shimmering, undulating waves. As the viewing angle shifts from north to south, the figure-ground relationship of the pattern even reverses. This design endows the static curtain wall with dynamic effects, adding more aesthetic dimensions to the building.
