Between rice paddies and a pond, an irregular plot is sliced by field ridges and farm roads, with one edge extending into the water. The project accommodates multiple public programs—exhibiting rice-farming culture, showcasing and selling local produce, and providing space for visitors to pause and stay—while also requiring an elevated viewpoint. The compact site condition leads to a “symbiosis of tower and hall”: the pavilion unfolds along the shoreline, and a tower is embedded at its end, forming a rural device that can be walked through and looked from.

The plan is organized through a centripetal, curved layout. Stretching along the water, the building gathers into a tightened arc to form an inward-facing edge toward the pond. A continuous exhibition-and-retail frontage stitches the circulation together, embedding “rice-farming culture” and “produce display/experience” into a single, meandering spatial band. Under the pull of the arc, rooms unfold in sequence; views shift between the waterside interface and the inner open space, and the route naturally leads to the vertical viewing tower at the end.

The roof generates an undulating rhythm through a parametrically derived folded line, resembling lifted contour waves across the fields. Developed in modular segments and continuously spliced, the folded roof unifies the exhibition hall, service areas, and rest spaces under one continuous “cover.” Variations in height reduce the heaviness typical of rural public buildings, making the architecture read as a lightweight frame hovering between farmland and water. As seen in the axonometric and details, the timber roof and the steel column system together establish a clear yet light construction boundary.

From the underside, timber beams and purlins reveal a consistent structural logic, while timber boards extend continuously as a ceiling plane. Deep eaves directly expose the thickness and layering of the roof. Controlled by the centripetal curved plan, roof members vary subtly in size and angle across different positions, producing a richer eave line with shifts, rises, and turns.

The tower serves as a site marker and forms a “tower–hall symbiosis” with the horizontally extended pavilion. Set against the folded roof, the vertical lookout is paired with an external stair that makes the ascent a visible route. As visitors climb, the view gradually lifts from the nearby water and fields, eventually opening toward a distant panorama of the village and farmland.

Materials and construction further reinforce the contrast between “light and heavy.” A concrete frame establishes a stable base, while the upper structure—steel framing with large floor-to-ceiling glazing—organizes the public frontage, maximizing visual permeability between exhibition, café, and resting areas and the surrounding farmland-and-water landscape. Solid wall panels are inserted locally to provide exhibition backdrops and necessary screening. The tower’s external stair is connected by flat-steel railings and platforms, interweaving around solid walls clad with mounted cement decorative panels. This interplay of solid and void allows the “landmark” to appear not as a dominant mass, but as an approachable assemblage of details and light-and-shadow.

During construction, the structural logic is exposed to its fullest. Steel columns and beams first establish a clear load-bearing grid, forming an elevated, transparent frame on site. Prefabricated timber roof frames are then lifted and positioned piece by piece, extending the timber beams and roof boards outward. The steel stair—built in parallel as a vertical route—allows the project’s spatial skeleton to become legible even before the enclosure is completed.

Inside, timber beams and a timber ceiling form a continuous, warm overhead field, translating the folded roof into a sequence of undulating beam frames. On one side, a curved solid wall carries exhibition and information surfaces; on the other, large glazing opens the view, bringing fields and water into everyday sitting and wandering. Horizontal window bands filter the light, while shifting shadows move across the concrete floor and timber structure, giving the interior changing depth and directional cues over time.

Part of the building extends over the water, and the pond’s reflection “extends” the folded roof into a second ripple. The tower’s vertical lines contrast with the horizontal textures of ridges and shoreline, becoming a light coordinate within the rural scale. Paths and small stopping platforms along the pond guide visitors toward the pavilion and tower, then continue from the architecture back to the water’s edge and into the fields—transforming the rice-farming landscape from a distant backdrop into an everyday public scene that can be reached, paused within, and viewed.
