Text description provided by the architects. Nova Contemporary is a contemporary art gallery dedicated to supporting artists from Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Thailand. In addition to serving as a platform for the acquisition and sale of works by represented artists, the gallery is open to the public, offering free access to its rotating exhibitions.

Located in the Samyan area on Si Phraya Road, Nova Contemporary sits at the intersection between Bangkok's old and new urban fabric. The neighborhood is surrounded by modern office buildings, a university, temples, and rows of shophouses lining the street. The gallery occupies a renovated five-story shophouse comprising two adjoining units. With the intention of preserving the charm of the building and the atmosphere of Bangkok, the architects chose to retain the existing structural framework and key architectural elements, such as the terrazzo flooring, door handles, and railings. Only essential additions were introduced, including white gypsum walls for displaying artworks, necessary surface finishes, and building systems.

In plan, the building is organized into two main zones. The southern side, facing Si Phraya Road, contains the primary functional spaces, including the exhibition galleries, a private viewing room, and office areas. The northern side houses the main circulation, preserving the original staircase, along with other service areas.

The main entrance is accessed via a small alley—an open void between rows of shophouses—that draws visitors from the main road into a narrow passageway evoking the authentic character of Bangkok. The façade on this side features large sliding polycarbonate panels. During exhibition openings, these openings function like balconies, visually and socially connecting people on different floors, allowing them to see one another, converse, and engage socially across floors.

The main gallery on the ground floor is a double-volume space. The revolving door facing Si Phraya Road not only facilitates the transport of large-scale artworks and brings natural light into the gallery, but also serves as a display window for passersby while simultaneously framing views of the city for visitors inside. In contrast, the gallery on the third floor has a standard ceiling height, with clerestory openings that allow in only soft, subdued light. This space can, on occasion, be adapted for video exhibitions that require low-light conditions.

Beyond its role as an institution that supports and promotes emerging artists, Nova Contemporary is committed to bringing art closer to the surrounding community and creating a memorable experience for visitors. Rather than acting merely as a neutral backdrop that allows artworks to stand out, the gallery embodies a distinct character infused with the spirit of Bangkok.
