The secret to legally owning a “fairytale cottage” lies not in breaking building codes, but in redefining the relationship between light, function, and emotion within the rules—using design to write personality into space, making home a reflection of the soul.

This is a 240-square-meter terraced villa located within a half-hour living circle of the capital, comprising four floors including the basement. The owners are a young couple who love books and small animals—two very affectionate individuals whose personalities are full of kindness and childlike innocence. Therefore, we aimed to create a secluded fairytale cottage for them.

The project is situated in northern China, as a middle unit in a row of terraced villas. Residential layouts in northern regions often feature narrow facades and greater depth, with the depth frequently being several times the width. This results in insufficient natural lighting in the central areas of the space, which became the core issue to address in the design. The owners’ requirements were: most of the time, they needed private spaces for comfort and relaxation, while retaining some shared areas for hosting friends.

The challenge lay in the central area, which serves both as a vertical circulation hub and houses concentrated shower facilities. Within the limited area, it faced dual pressures from lighting needs and functional density. To resolve this contradiction, solid partition walls were abandoned in favor of transparent glass materials, creating continuous light paths. Curved walls softened the rigid boundaries between different functional zones, blurring divisions while maintaining a sense of spatial flow.

After the renovation, through the reorganization of the core area, the originally confined central space was vertically connected, forming an open visual corridor that extends from top to bottom. This also enhanced the overall transparency and brightness. The reshaping of the core area naturally reinforced the definition of various functional zones. Vertically, the multi-level spaces present a clear transition from “public halls” to “private rooms,” with distinct layers between public and private areas.

The public areas on the B1 and 1st floors are not only physically connected by stairs but also benefit from a double-height design that introduces natural light. This creates a dual integration of visual and behavioral flowlines, enhancing spatial continuity and functional efficiency.

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors are customized according to the occupants’ personalities: the 2nd floor is designated as the male owner’s exclusive space, while the 3rd and 4th floors are reserved for the female owner. This ensures that each family member has their own “domain of belonging” tailored to their needs. In terms of overall spatial organization, the design supports collective family activities while fully respecting and accommodating individual independence and personalized requirements.
