摘要
Abstract
Ninho Globo is a monumental, hand-built sphere set in the windswept landscape of Salvaterra do Extremo, Portugal. Crafted from local black schist, it evokes celestial bodies, nests, and the geological memory of the land. The artwork invites to a direct, physical encounter, questioning our relationship with habitat, the common good, and the passage of time, while bridging local history and contemporary artistic practice.

An Open Site
Located in central Portugal, at the eastern border with Spain, the village of Salvaterra do Extremo has maintained centuries-long ties with its neighbor. The site occupies a singular topography, perched between a promontory and a defensive post overlooking the Hispano-Portuguese plateau, carved by the gorges of the Rio Erges. The project is set at the heart of former “furdas,” built from dry stone on a granite base sculpted by the elements. Now abandoned, this former pig-farming site comprises dozens of low stone walls forming enclosures with their miniature shelters covered in mortared stone slabs. It creates a small landscape strongly shaped by human intervention and endowed with heritage and archaeological significance. Open to the elements, the location offers a panoramic view east towards Spain, including the Castelo de Peñafiel, and west towards Portugal. Conceived in situ, the work emerged from the artists’ perception of a site swept by winds, constantly evolving under the path of the sun and the heavenly bodies, anchored in a singular borderland topography.

Intentions
The sphere is invoked here as the quintessential geometric form, evoking celestial bodies and an awareness of the planet as a shared place. It recalls its mineral origins. Geometrically, it represents the most “economical” use of space and natural equilibrium. It embodies both stability and potential movement, gravity and balance. It conveys a sense of permanence, while engaging the body of those who experience it in a physical and spatial relationship.

The Canyon

A fissure appears, inviting entry. It illustrates both the trace and the absence of water, a precious and vital element whose value is well known in Salvaterra, and whose flow shapes rock over time, as seen in the Rio Erges canyon. The experience of visiting the hollowed volume evokes rocky cavities that serve as habitats or nests—natural architectures that provide shelter for life to settle and develop. Is it a nest or a planet? This play of scale between two concepts raises questions: For whom is this nest? Can it be used? It challenges our relationship to the common good: how can it be used responsibly so that it endures? Who will come after us?

Black Schist & Community

Portuguese black schist (Xisto Preto), layered in formation, creates a dialogue between geological and architectural timeframes. Sourced from the land that shapes central Portugal’s identity, it contrasts with the granite while reinforcing cultural ties between territory and community. The 5-meter-diameter sphere was conceived and realized following several residencies on site in the village of Salvaterra, which gave rise to exchanges and workshops with local residents around the project. It was handcrafted by the artists and local workers using low-tech, simple methods chosen to respect the site and involve inhabitants. With patience, curiosity, and collective energy, these gestures resulted in a work that is both monumental and timeless.

Landscape Together & Experimenta Paisagem
Ninho Globo was realized through the Landscape Together project, initiated and coordinated by the curators of MAG—Marques de Aguiar, an architectural office based in Porto and founders of the open-air museum Museu Experimenta Paisagem. MAG invited YokYok to be partners on the Landscape Together project, co-funded by the European Union (Creative Europe program). The curatorial team, Marta Aguiar and Mariana Costa, challenged the artists to imagine and create a site-specific artwork in Salvaterra do Extremo, within the theme of sustainable design and through a community engagement method. Ninho Globo is now part of Museu Experimenta Paisagem. Landscape Together engaged 17 partners (artists, communities, universities) from five countries to contribute—through art, new hiking trails, and social, cultural, and educational activities—to the development of rural Portugal. The project also received support from the Institut Français in Paris for cultural activities related to Ninho Globo and the YokYok team.
