Once part of the Gdańsk Shipyard, where both ships and the Solidarity movement that reshaped Eastern Europe were born, Hall 31B now houses a vibrant cultural ecosystem — blending architecture, art and sustainability under one reclaimed roof.

Originally erected in the late 19th century the 31B hall, a part of the historical Gdańsk shipyard, served in its lifetime as a wood drying plant, a mess hall, boxing training center, and office space amongst many other functions. Luckily in recent years it managed to avoid the tragic fate of being demolished.

Since 2023 the entire hall underwent a thorough renovation and opened its door in the summer of 2025 – hosting a non-commercial, cultural space called Grid Arthub upstairs, supported by a less waste vegetarian restaurant called Dust Kitchen, Plot Social Club and the offices of The Gdansk Tourism Organization on the bottom floor. Activities on the ground level enable preferential rent rates for artists and creatives working on the first floor, as well as an extensive cultural programme designed to foster the growing creative sector in Poland.

Grid Arthub’s interior relies heavily on reused materials. The spectacular wooden flooring was sourced from the Olympic Training Center in Cetniewo. “It was a true challenge to find over 1,000 square meters of healthy flooring, free from adhesive, from a single source. Luckily, we found a contractor who was replacing the flooring in the Cetniewo sports hall, and we were able to acquire it. A stroke of luck. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as buying new – it involves careful manual removal, storage, cleaning each plank by hand, and finally, reinstalling it. Many people were skeptical about this approach; we decided not to sand the floor, which means it’s uneven. But by keeping the colorful sports field lines visible, it has character and tells its story – recalls the architect Filip Kozarski (IPA studio), responsible for the interior design of the 31b hall.

Grid Arthub provides a new level of security and comfort for local artists. Not only do they finally have central heating, running water, etc. but also a ten year contract, which is uncommon in heavily gentrified areas. Some of our residents include Mariusz Waras – a street artist known globally for his project called m-city or PB/Studio an architecture company, which recently got nominated with Ipreferanalog and studiomania for the Mies van der Rohe prize – adds Alicja Jabłonowska, the founder of Grid Arthub and Plot Social Club – our goal is to create a place where creativity can truly flourish and a community in which it can easily flow intergenerationally. We are off to a great start.

Many other elements have also been reclaimed and reused: the glazing of the studio windows was made from dismantled skylight panes from the hall’s rooftop, while old stoneware tiles and stone offcuts grace the floor. Door handles, bathroom countertops and partition walls are made of recycled plastic. The visible red and green elements are shredded Coca-Cola and Sprite crates – waste from a nearby bar. Most furniture is also handpicked and reused by the architect.

The main goal was to create a welcoming space for various cultural activities, a place with potential – a good framework, with an open design – adaptable, offering possibilities and flexibility. I believe that a space like this must be able to grow, to evolve; there has to be room left for life and for future, yet unforeseeable, uses and changes – explains Kozarski, the head of Ipreferanalog studio. Elements that couldn’t be reused, were built on-site by the production team using D.I.Y methods, construction materials and sometimes open source projects, like the Enzo Mari chair. Other designs were created by Kozarski with the intent to easily be disentangled, repurposed and reused – like the big, red table or yellow bookshelf made from formwork panels and scaffolding pipes, or the bulletin board clad in corrugated sheet metal.
