VINEYARD IN DOBRZEŃ MAŁY, POLAND
The recent revival of viticulture in Poland has brought renewed attention to the landscapes and buildings that support it. Set among rows of vines, the vineyard building emerges as a quiet, utilitarian structure shaped by place, material, and the rhythm of wine production. Its architecture is defined by restraint and clarity—a single, coherent volume that draws on the typology of traditional agricultural buildings of the Opole region, while responding to contemporary needs.
The building combines functions of storage, warehousing, and small-scale wine production within one compact form. Large sliding windows, recessed into the walls, allow the interior to open completely from one side to the other. On one side, the vines rise close to the building, enabling users to remain inside while feeling the wind and observing the grapes that will later become wine. The space encourages pause, presence, and a direct relationship with the surrounding landscape.
As the program expanded, a concrete wine cellar was introduced beneath the building. Designed with a barrel vault, the cellar allows all installations to be concealed within the side arches, preserving the raw and honest expression of the material. Concrete defines the space entirely—appearing on the walls, floor, and ceiling. Glass doors were used to avoid competing with the expressive texture of the concrete, while bush-hammered concrete on the end wall enhances the material’s depth and character. The staircase becomes another point of architectural expression, revealing the junction of concrete and brick in a deliberately imperfect composition that emphasizes the handcrafted nature of the construction.
The cellar is not only a place for storing wine, but also a sensory experience shaped by materiality. Upon entering, the weight of the concrete walls is immediately felt, as they absorb sound and create an atmosphere of silence. The rough surface invites touch, allowing one to sense the coolness and rawness of the material. The scent of damp concrete, combined with the earthy aromas of grapes and wood, reinforces the natural character of the space. Engaging all the senses, the cellar offers an experience of calm and harmony, where every detail carries meaning.
