UNI-CENTER project renovates Hanyang University's existing Student Union, located along the main pedestrian axis connecting the subway station, the main building, and the welfare center, into a welfare-centered, multi-functional community hub for students. The design goes beyond simple functional enhancement—it restores the building's sense of place and redefines it as a central node within the campus circulation network.

The former Student Union was isolated from its surroundings, with closed and segmented interior layouts. The renovation opens the building visually and physically toward the outdoor plaza, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. By inserting spatial devices that encourage people to linger and interact, corridors were transformed into social spaces, and walls were removed to create an open layout connecting programs organically.

The façade was renewed with a series of L-shaped framing elements wrapping around the windows, forming a rhythmic surface that emphasizes depth and continuity. A continuous curved surface extending from ceiling to wall and floor redefines the once-rigid vertical façade into a fluid, inviting form. This design element naturally guides movement between outdoor and indoor spaces while offering areas for rest. The previously dark terrace was brightened with metal louvers, linear lighting, and green-toned outdoor furniture, transforming it into an active interface between the building and the campus plaza.

Inside, the first-floor main hall was unified into one large open volume. It now functions as a community lounge consisting of three areas: the Table Lounge for group activities, the Stair Lounge for informal sitting and gathering, and the Bar Lounge for individual relaxation and study. At the lounge's end lies a semi-transparent counseling booth designed for both visual openness and acoustic privacy.

The administrative area, reinterpreted as the Student Affairs Office, features an organically shaped birch and steel counter that serves as both structure and furniture. Bright tones and U-glass create a clear and welcoming environment.

Through the organic integration of previously fragmented functions, UNI-CENTER becomes a central platform for student welfare—a place to stay, connect, and engage. It proposes a new model for future campus architecture where openness, interaction, and belonging define the spatial experience.
