Text description provided by the architects. The new Hospital of Ontinyent is located to the south of the municipality, in the "Casa Balones" industrial area, in a heterogeneous zone of buildings, farming areas, and some facilities.
The plot is significantly rectangular, approximately two hundred seventy-five by one hundred fifteen meters, with a slope equivalent to two floors in both directions. The implantation strategy distributes different volumes in the center of the plot, on a horizontal platform understood as a large public square perforated by patios that bring light to the lower floors and support a rich vegetation.
To address the accessibility of the complex, the marked slope is resolved peripherally with landscaped slopes and longitudinally with open parking areas at the eastern and western ends. Transversely, the negative slope of the north facade is utilized to create two floors of a more restricted nature, where service areas and their vehicular circulation are resolved.
Thus, the hospital presents itself differently according to the context and the relationship it establishes with the user: to the north, visible from the city, it shows an urban equipment scale, with the six-story hospitalization body facade, recognizable from a distance; on the other hand, to the south, where the pedestrian accesses are located, the complex is fragmented into volumes of one and two stories that create small resting areas, with a much more human and friendly scale. This fragmentation, in addition to its environmental value, simplifies the functional relationships between areas, significantly complex in a hospital building, remaining interconnected by walkways at different levels that generate a landscape of light elements suspended between the main bodies.
Functionally speaking, on the platform that serves as a large public square, several volumes are located, connected by walkways according to their functional area. Below this platform, there are two additional levels, where the service spaces of the complex are located, including parking for workers and loading and unloading areas. By taking advantage of the slope of the plot, these two levels can have a facade facing north.
User flows are naturally distributed from the various accesses, differentiating the pedestrian routes from private vehicular accesses, those of the workers, and those of emergency services.
