Architectural Concept
The three cable car stations are conceived as a single mechanism, separated in space yet united by the continuous movement of cabins, people, and energy. Each station contains a part of a shared cultural and exhibition space dedicated to local engineers and architects. With a single ticket, visitors move sequentially through three “exhibition halls,” traveling between them in cabins suspended above the river, where panoramic views replace traditional museum corridors.
The main idea of the architectural image is the openness of mechanisms and engineering systems that are usually concealed. The concept is inspired by the legacy of Vladimir Shukhov and Ivan Kulibin — engineers whose ingenuity and bold technical vision became symbols of technological progress. The cable car cabins are interpreted as horizontal elevator cars set in motion by a system of screw mechanisms.
The architecture of the stations is based on the contrast between a dynamic solid volume and a transparent glass envelope. The projecting functional block, incorporating public and service spaces, forms a dynamic, “pulsating” composition both externally and within the interior. The interior further emphasizes openness through the use of exposed polished concrete, visible инженерные systems and electrical lines, and clearly articulated staircases and elevators.
Infrastructure concept
The cable car in Nizhny Novgorod creates a new transport link across the Oka River, connecting densely populated districts on the left bank with Shveytsariya Park and other key destinations on the right bank, reducing pressure on major roads and improving the environmental situation; at the same time, the project acts as a catalyst for the development of the Leninsky District and the transformation of waterfront areas, where stations become new points of attraction, stimulate comprehensive residential development and riverfront revitalization, and integrate the territory into the city’s cultural and tourist life through exhibition spaces within the stations, forming not only transport infrastructure but also a new cultural and educational environment.
