插入旧建筑的新功能“盒”

Functional “Boxes” Inserted into an Old Building

塑料人是专注于sofubi（soft vinyl的日语简称）搪胶艺术玩具的本土品牌，也是国内sofubi文化的主要推广平台之一。为了更方便传播和普及这一小众文化，塑料人邀请野境设计线下画廊空间P GALLERY，用于举办主题展、发售会以及为玩家提供线下交流的复合功能空间。

“Plastic People” is a local brand dedicated to sofubi (soft vinyl) art toys and a leading platform in promoting sofubi culture in China. To better popularize this niche culture, Plastic People commissioned OEOto create P GALLERY—a multifunctional space for themed exhibitions, product launches, and community gatherings.

项目场地原为北京市中心九十年代建成的综合市场，现已改造成街区式文创商业园区。画廊空间位于原建筑的东北转角，125平米的室内空间立面长，进深短。结合现状场地条件和画廊空间需求，我们在旧建筑立面上插入多个新的功能“盒”空间，以划分新的功能布局、改变人员动线、创建灵活的使用场景。

The gallery is situated in a regenerated1990s market hall in Beijing, now transformed into a cultural and creative commercial complex. Located at the northeast corner of the complex, the 125㎡ space features a long facade withshallow depth. Responding to site constraints and functional needs, we inserted several new “functional boxes” into the old structure. These volumes redefine spatial layouts, redirect circulation, and enable flexible usage scenarios.

插入旧建筑的独立功能“盒”均采用一致的形式和材料，不仅与旧建筑的粗放对比形成清晰的新空间体系，也符合低造价的设计要求。

All inserted boxes share a consistent form and materiality, creating a clear new spatial system that contrasts with the rough texture of the original building—while also meeting low-budget requirements.

功能盒I – 交通空间

画廊北立面是人流集中的下沉广场，北立面上插入功能盒作为画廊的入口交通空间，不仅在原本连续的立面上凸显进出室内的通道，引导人进入。还利用中间立柱和两侧的入口门设计分流人群，让动线流畅可控方便运营管理。结合中间立柱的海报灯箱设计还能为室外过往行人传达画廊内部展览/活动的信息。

Functional Box I – Circulation Hub

Facing a sunken plaza on the north facade, this box serves as the gallery entrance. It breaks the continuous elevation, signaling access and guiding visitors inside. A central column and dual-door design streamline crowd flow for efficient management. Integrated poster display on the column communicate exhibition and event information to passersby.

功能盒II – 互动空间

建筑转角空出的室外区域虽属画廊使用，但不与室内连通。对此，我们用两个相互对应的功能盒，让室内外产生关联。室外座位的设计，不仅为玩家提供相互交流的场所，也为园区增添了一处供人停留互动的公共空间。而室内展示墙面向室外座位，可以让人与画廊内部产生互动，吸引未曾了解过搪胶玩具的行人进入画廊观展，为sofubi文化的普及和推广起到积极作用。

Functional Box II – Interactive Zone

An outdoor area at the building corner belonged to the gallery, but lacked of connection with the indoor space. We placed two facing boxes to provide a visual linkage between inside and outside. The exterior seating encourages interaction among collectors and adds a public resting spot to the complex. The indoor display wall faces outward, allowing engagement with the street and inviting curious visitors to explore—effectively promoting Sofubi culture.

室内部分的功能盒外部墙面展示，内部是储物空间，其与服务台组成画廊接待服务功能区。而为了体现功能盒空间体系的独立和完整，服务台选用了镜面材料让其在空间中消隐。

The display wall combined with a reception counter clad in mirror-finish (making it visually recessive) forms a seamless service area.

功能盒III – 变化空间

除了日常展览，新品发售、艺术家分享、工艺讲解等交流活动也是画廊的主要需求。因此，我们插入功能盒分隔出部分空间可供灵活使用，展览时连通其它空间整体展览使用，活动时可封闭成独立空间组织活动，单独设置的出入口也避免了活动时对主要展览空间的影响。

Functional Box III – Adaptable Space

Beyond regular exhibitions, the gallery hosts launches, artist talks, and workshops. This box creates a divisible zone: open during exhibitions, closed for events. A separate entrance ensures activities don’t disrupt the main gallery usage.

P GALLERY 的设计是一次功能驱动的新空间体系构建。因为在城市更新的改造项目中，原有老旧的建筑空间通常对改造设计有诸多限制，所以这次我们尝试为旧建筑插入新的空间体系，以适应新的使用需求，也为城市更新注入一些新的活力。

P GALLERY demonstrates afunction-driven spatial strategyin adaptive space. In urban regeneration projects, old structures often impose limits—here, we inserted a new spatial system to meet contemporary needs, injecting fresh vitality into the evolving city fabric.
