Above the Tea Fields

At five hundred meters above sea level, tea terraces cascade toward the horizon, occasionally threaded with mist. The Floating Pavilion sits at the summit of these terraces — a slender white form suspended above the tea fields, as if a thin wing had just been lifted by the wind. To float is at once a structural condition — a thin roof hovering above the ground on minimal supports — and a quality of time in this place, where mist drifts, light shifts, and one pauses briefly on the mountain, as in a fleeting moment of respite. Adhering to a principle of minimal intervention, the project employs a lightweight structural system that hovers above the tea fields, interrogating through spatial sequencing and tectonic precision the threshold between architectural intervention and natural terrain.

Site and Path
The site lies approximately thirty kilometers from Songyang’s urban center, within the Organic Tea Valley of Xinxing Town, Songyang County, Zhejiang Province, occupying the summit of a terraced tea mountain. Songyang is a significant tea-producing region in southwestern Zhejiang, where tea gardens and villages are interwoven across mountain valleys, and tea rows, field ridges, and picking trails compose a continuous agricultural landscape. The site commands open views of rolling tea mountains in every direction, with mist occasionally rising from the valley floor. Originally accessible only by narrow field paths, the steep terrain bore no existing structures. The design originates from a slender, hovering form — wing-like or leaf-like — that minimizes physical impact on the terrain while maintaining unobstructed panoramic views. The ascending path follows and reinforces existing tea-picking routes. Granite steps wind upward through the terraces, guiding visitors toward the pavilion while preserving the spatial logic of everyday agricultural practice. The architectural intervention thus emerges as an organic continuation of the cultivated landscape rather than its disruption.

Tectonic Strategy: Lightness and Transparency

The pavilion employs a slender steel structural system paired with a thin composite sandwich roof. A lightweight steel grid embedded between upper and lower steel plates forms an efficient load-bearing assembly, achieving structural clarity with minimal material depth. The roof edge tapers downward, integrating structural logic, drainage requirements, and visual control into a single gesture that compresses perceived thickness. This treatment produces a crisp, lightweight profile that reads as a blade floating above the tea fields. Tectonic detailing amplifies the perception of levitation. The deck is supported by a single primary transverse beam, with cantilevering achieved through wedge-shaped steel plate stiffeners. A deliberate separation between the platform edge and vertical columns creates semicircular voids, allowing light to infiltrate from below and visually detaching the structure from the ground. Slender steel tension cables between columns provide necessary safety while minimizing visual obstruction, preserving the pavilion’s transparency.

Ascent Narrative

The ascent to the pavilion unfolds as a choreographed spatial narrative. Following existing tea-picking routes, granite steps wind upward through the terraces, with the pavilion roof intermittently appearing and disappearing from view. The zigzagging path echoes the inclination of the roof, allowing the structure to merge with the mountain’s rhythm. Near the summit, a white corner of the pavilion emerges; from the highest point, visitors survey the reservoir to the south before descending gently into the pavilion across a gravel threshold. The path turns again, interlacing with the layered tea terraces.

Compression and Release

Within the pavilion, the viewing experience shifts from compression to release. Initial views are tightly framed by the roof edge; as visitors descend along stepped platforms, daylight and surrounding mountains gradually unfold; at the lowest level, the lifted roof opens the view entirely, revealing a full panorama of the tea valley. This spatial rhythm — from compression to release — is achieved not through formal complexity but through the precise calibration of roof curvature and topographic drop. The stepped platforms respond directly to the terraced terrain, offering varied spatial scales for pause, rest, and informal gathering, while enabling moments of contemplation and tea drinking. The pavilion thus operates not merely as an observation point but as a spatial mediator embedded within the rhythms of the tea landscape.

Light, Shadow, and Time
The lighting design extends the theme of lightness. Custom cylindrical luminaires mounted at the column bases echo the pavilion’s geometric vocabulary. Light projects upward, diffusing softly across the curved roof surface, tracing the pavilion’s outline with a gentle glow that suggests mist floating above the tea mountain. The matte metal surface reflects ambient light and surrounding colors, registering seasonal and diurnal variations. Verdant tones dominate in spring and summer; autumn and winter mist diffuses light, rendering the structure cloud-like. Through the interplay of natural and artificial light, the temporality of space becomes perceptible.

Lightweight Mountain Construction
The site was originally accessible only via narrow field paths, with steep terrain precluding the use of heavy machinery. A lightweight construction strategy was therefore adopted: components were transported to the summit using wheeled carts and cable systems prior to path completion; steel elements were prefabricated and partially pre-assembled off-site, enabling efficient and precise on-site installation; primary and secondary components were produced in segments to balance constructability and quality. Excavation and vegetation disturbance were strictly minimized throughout construction, followed by ecological restoration upon completion — the building process itself calibrated as a measured response to the mountain environment.

Dissolution into Everyday Life
Following completion, the pavilion and its access path were absorbed into the everyday rhythms of villagers and visitors, serving as a node for walking, pausing, and witnessing sunrise and sunset, while improving access for tea farmers during harvest. The project’s intention extends beyond creating a viewing landmark — through a light and restrained intervention, through continuous spatial sequencing and embodied experience, it guides perception of the natural landscape while gradually becoming part of that landscape through use.
