In December, the ZILART Museum and Exhibition Center opened in Moscow’s ZILART district. Architectural studio UTRO created an unusual space where parents and children can spend time together, discover new things, and relax. The architectural project is divided into three zones: a playful total installation — where everything feels familiar yet works by its own rules; a mobile workshop space for workshops; and objects for comfortable parenting — nursing booths for feeding babies.

“We sought to create a space that would allow families with children to have a truly emotionally rich experience of interacting with a museum institution and with art. Families are a key audience for a contemporary city, and particularly for a district like ZILART, so we create conditions in which children can naturally immerse themselves in the world of art, feel joy and curiosity, while adults can either play with their child or relax nearby,” says Olga Rokal, the author and architect of the project and co-founder of UTRO.

Everything Here Behaves the Way It Does in a Dream
Concept sketch © UTRO architectural studio

Visitors are first greeted by the interactive space Dream of the City, created by architect and UTRO co-founder Olga Rokal together with artist Dina Leonova. Dream of the City is a multilayered image and a playful setting for games and educational activities: a flying moon, a copper bridge, and a baroque portal decorated with stucco pineapples and donuts — all set against a sunset backdrop.

“The interactive space Dream of the City is one of my favorite places in the museum. To me, this is exactly what a playground in a contemporary museum should look like. It is a surreal total installation where you can slide down a copper slide, build your own city, or watch a family performance,” comments Irina Tolpina, director of the ZILART Museum. “We noticed that it attracts not only children but adults as well, which means the architects managed to create an outstanding and eye-catching art object.”

The main element shaping the space is a bridge leading from nowhere to nowhere. It is unclear whether it grows out of the play landscape or sinks into a puddle that seems to climb up the wall. Toward the bottom the bridge splits in two: one part becomes a soft slope, while the other turns into a copper slide. Most importantly, the space beneath the bridge forms an endless play loop within the arches — perfect for games of tag and hide-and-seek.

One of the challenges of the room is that two emergency exits pass through it. One of them is framed with a baroque portal. The stucco decorating the arch takes the form of donuts, ice cream, and pineapples. The rusticated stones in the columns of the arch can be easily removed — they function as soft poufs. A city-building set made of the same material features the buildings of the ZILART district that visitors pass on their way to the museum.

In the play landscape and soft slope area there is a place for organized activities such as shared readings, film screenings, and cartoons. The poufs can be arranged in a semicircle, while attention is drawn to a large circle of the setting sun on the wall. It also serves as a theatrical backdrop for performances, or a screen can be rolled out onto it.

Small hidden details are scattered throughout the space, adding a sense of surrealism and intrigue. Behind small doors in the walls are miniature dwellings of the fairytale residents of the city. In one room there is a musical bunny surrounded by its favorite paintings; in another, a reading hen next to a volume of The Golden Cockerel; and in a third, a pair of coffee-loving dogs. We also added buttons that, when pressed, play sounds reflecting the history of the district: the bells of the Simonov Monastery, the whistle of the circular railway train, the splash of the Moscow River, birdsong, and the chirping of a cricket.

Next to the play area there is a mobile workshop space for workshops and lectures. It continues the concept of “familiar yet unusual” spaces: two semicircular wall segments can slide apart to form an open area and, when necessary, close to separate the activities from the general museum flow.

On the outside, the walls are covered with light curtains made of metal mesh in dawn-colored tones. Inside, a dense curtain allows participants to retreat so nothing interferes with the creative process. The working area consists of tables arranged in a circle in the shape of a “bitten donut,” along with stools for participants.

Objects for Comfortable Motherhood
Anyone familiar with parenting knows how difficult it can be for mothers to remain part of the city’s public and cultural life during the first year and a half after a child is born. For this reason, specially for the ZILART Museum we created comfortable and beautiful nursing booths — a unique object with no equivalent in any museum in Moscow.

Renaissance-style arches made of perforated steel sheet on a copper frame allow mothers to sit privately with their child in a comfortable chair behind thick curtains. The chair is made of an easy-to-maintain material and complemented with cushions that can be placed under the back or arm, or used to support the baby. A compact round table with a stable base allows visitors to place a bottle or a phone without worrying about it tipping over. This project helps parents return more quickly to their usual life in a new role.
