Current situation

Near the Arctic Ocean, on the shores of Kola Bay, 2,000 kilometers from Moscow, lies the ancient city of Kola, founded in the 16th century by Russian fishing industry workers.Kola has long been a fishing hub, an international trade hub, a stronghold of Russian statehood and Orthodoxy in the Russian North, and the administrative center of the Kola region.

History

As early as 1,000 BC, the area near the mouth of the Kola and Tuloma rivers was inhabited by the Sami, forming seasonal trade routes (fishing, hunting, reindeer herding).Mid-16th century (c. 1550s) — The first written mentions of the Kola Pogost as an administrative and trading post.1804 — Kola officially receives the status of a district town.2000s–2020s — Development as part of the Murmansk agglomeration, emphasis on local identity.

Tourism

The Kola Peninsula in the Murmansk Region creates zonal tourist routes centered on the city of Murmansk and the transportation hub of Kola. The region offers a combination of polar experiences, cultural and historical sites, and active recreation in the natural environment.

Most activity in the city takes place through municipal institutions or regional structures. There are virtually no independent communities (initiative groups, urban clubs, art communities) formalized as separate public organizations specifically in Kola.

CONSEPT

The community center is a new point of attraction and landmark in Kola, shaping the city's public center. The project reimagines the city's role as a transit hub and transforms it into the first stop in the Arctic, a meeting placefor people, meanings, and routes.The center's architecture is born from the cultural codes of the North: wind, snow, the northern lights, and local identity. These images are not quoted literally, but are softly embodied in the building's form, the rhythm of the façade, and the formation of its form.The primary inspiration was the region's natural environment, integrated into both the architectural image and the planning and landscaping of the area.The building appears swirled by a vortex that descended to earth and froze in the Arctic ice.

Identity

The identity of the Arctic Community Center is based on the generalized ethnocultural codes of the Arctic peoples: ideas of center, path, orientation,and collectivity. The visual language is formed through abstract geometry and a structured grid with a prominent central element, symbolizing the center and place of social interaction.

Architecture

The public center's façade is assembled from several layers that act as a single climatic shell. A transparent belt of glazing and parapet creates a light-filled public perimeter and provides a visual connection with the landscape. Above it, a metallic spatial superstructure-shell develops: a multilayered flow reminiscent of a blizzard or a cap of snow.

Structurally, the building is designed in a combined system with a metal frame and an independent façade shell, which allows for the combination of complex plasticity with technological advancement.

Facade adaptation

The building features a dynamic façade with a perforated pattern based on the project's identity. It functions as an adjustable screen, adapting to light, wind, and seasons, enhancing the building's climate resilience and image.

Plan

Functionally, the center combines social, public, cultural, and educational spaces: exhibitions, lecture halls, workshops, a media center, a café, and event areas. The layout features seamless transitions and numerous open lecture halls. A key feature is the inclusion of an oasis, which will create a touch of summer even in winter.

Our center needed to create space not only indoors but also outdoors, so we developed landscaping for the surrounding area. A seasonally transformative scenario is created around the building—from summer festivals and walks to winter fairs, light installations, and northern lights viewing.
