It may be a wine glass.It may be a mug.It may be neither.Silhouette shifts attention away from functional classificationand toward how form is perceived.From one viewpoint, the proportions and outline of a wine glass are read first. As the viewing angle changes, the image of a handled mug comes into view. While the physical form remains singular, its visual identity does not settle into one reading.This dual perception extends beyond the object itself to the shadow it casts. Form and shadow suggest different images,allowing a single object to be read in multiple ways.Rather than reinforcing a fixed functional type, Silhouette approaches design as a question of perception-how objects are seen, recognized, and named.

Silhouette Tea Vessel

A tea vessel is often identified through a familiar set of formal cues. These cues allow the object to be recognized and named before its use is considered.In this object, those cues are reduced or displaced. While the conventional markers that signal a tea vessel are no longer clearly present, the object continues to function through use.Recognition does not begin with appearance, but unfolds through handling and pouring. The form does not settle into a single, immediately legible identity.Rather than relying on a fixed silhouette to define the object, Silhouette considers how use can become the starting point for recognition-how an object is understood not by what it looks like, but by how it functions.

다관은 보통 주둥이와 손잡이 같은 형태적 요소를 통해 인식된다. 우리는 이러한 실루엣을 기준으로 사물을 즉각적으로 구분하고 규정한다.실루엣 연작은 이러한 인식 방식에 대한 의문에서 출발한다. 기능과 사용은 그대로 유지한 채, 사물을 정의해온 형태적 표상만을 가려보려는 시도다. 주둥이와 손잡이처럼 다관을 상징하던 요소들은 제거되거나 다른 방식으로 치환되었지만, 이 오브젝트는 여전히 다관의 기능대로 작동한다.와인잔처럼 보이기도 하고 머그잔처럼 인식되기도 했던 '실루엣 컵' 이 각도에 따른 인식의 전환을 보여주었다면, 이 다관은 사물을 인식할 수 있게 해온 형태적 단서를 최소화함으로써, 사물이 어떻게 사용되고 기능하는가에서 출발해 형태를 다시 정의할 수 있음을 제안한다.
