Background

We propose the possibility of humans not as mere consumers of technology, but as active beings who generate and supply energy themselves. Riding represents a culture of continuous demand that encompasses both the individual and the collective, while disused gas stations, emerging with the spread of electric vehicles, become new urban resources. Through riding, humans shift their role from energy consumers to energy suppliers. And disused gas stations are redefined not as places to fuel machines, but as human-centered energy circulation hubs where people generate and provide energy.

The WATT Bike is an energy harvesting bicycle that can be borrowed from the WATT STATION to generate energy. It converts surplus energy generated during riding into electricity to provide a new experience as a subject that produces itself, away from the existence of only consuming electricity.

The WATT BIKE transforms the headwind, vibrations, and the rotation of its wheels into electrical energy. A single rider’s power may be small, but when the everyday rides of many citizens come together, they generate meaningful energy that can light up the city.

WATT BIKE는 달리며 마주하는 바람과 진동, 그리고 바퀴의 회전을 전기에너지로 바꿉니다. 한 사람의 에너지는 작지만, 수많은 시민의 일상적인 라이딩이 모이면 도시를 밝히는 의미 있는 전력이 됩니다.

The WATT BIKE’s airflow system begins at the head tube, runs through the top tube, and continues to the seat tube. During riding, the headwind entering the frame drives the impeller, converting it into electrical energy.

Inspired by the form of a key, WATT KEY BATTERY is intuitively held between the thumb and index finger, with its lower part echoing the shape of a key knife.

The WATT DOCKING STAND, installed in WATT STATION, serves as the central device for rental, return, and energy circulation. After harvesting energy through riding, users return the WATT BIKE and insert the WATT KEY BATTERY, directly returning the energy they have produced.

WATT DOCKING STAND는 WATT STATION 내부에 설치되어, WATT BIKE의 대여와 반납, 그리고 에너지 환원의 과정을 연결하는 핵심 장치입니다. 사용자는 라이딩을 통해 모은 에너지를 WATT BIKE 반납과 동시에 WATT KEY BATTERY를 삽입하는 행위로 직접 환원하게 됩니다.

WATT STATION is an energy-harvesting hub where people generate electricity by cycling. By reusing a disused gas station, it transforms the site from a place where machines are fueled into a human-centered energy circulation station where people themselves produce and supply energy while engaging in diverse experiences. WATT STATION은 자전거를 타며 사람이 직접 에너지를 생산하는 에너지 하베스팅 스테이션입니다. 유휴 주유소를 활용하며, 기계에 에너지를 주입하는 공간이 아닌, 사람이 에너지를 생산하고 공급하고 다양한 체험을 할 수 있는 인간 중심의 에너지 순환 거점입니다.

Design Process

With 40-degree inclined walls and columns shaped after the bicycle frame, the space embodies a dynamic character. The gradually filling form visualizes the progress of battery charging, imparting a sense of speed and direction to the space. 벽면의 40도 기울기와 자전거 프레임 형태를 적용한 기둥은 다이나믹한 이미지를 나타냅니다. 점점 채워지는 듯한 형태는 배터리 충전의 진행률을 시각화하며 공간에 속도감과 방향성을 부여합니다.

Reception ZoneAfter completing the identity verification and registration process, you will receive a WATT KEY BATTERY. 본인 확인 및 신규 등록 과정을 거친 후, WATT KEY BATTERY를 수령받게 됩니다.

Energy TankEnergy generated through cycling is stored here, with the tank displaying real-time energy levels.

Users can unlock the WATT BIKEby inserting their rented KEY BATTERY.

Warming-Up Zone Preparation space where users can warm up before the main ride. In the stationary cycling zone, participants generate energy together while enjoying games and friendly competition.

본격적인 라이딩에 앞서 몸을 풀 수 있는 준비 공간입니다. 고정형 사이클 존에서는 참가자들이 함께 게임과 경쟁을 즐기며 에너지를 생산합니다.

Watt-TrackIn the indoor track, users generate energy by cycling. 실내에서 자전거를 타며 에너지를 직접 생산합니다.

Recharge Lounge A space where riders can take a break at any time during their ride. The open view toward the track naturally encourages cheering and spectating for fellow riders. 라이딩 도중 언제든지 앉아 휴식할 수 있는 공간입니다. 트랙을 향해 열린 시야는 다른 라이더들을 응원하고 관람할 수 있는 자연스러운 흐름을 만들어냅니다.

Outdoor Track

The track extends into the outdoor space on the second floor, offering a dynamic riding experience along its looped structure. The exit of the upper-level track reconnects with the entrance on the first floor, creating a continuous cycling circuit.

트랙은 2층 야외 공간으로 이어져 루프형 구조를 따라 다이나믹한 라이딩을 제공합니다. 2층 트랙의 출구는 1층 입구와 연결되어, 트랙이 끊임없이 순환하는 흐름을 형성합니다.
