Auckland-based design showroom Obery is bringing its considered approach to the Australian market, with a new trade-focused space set to open in Melbourne’s Cremorne this autumn.

Founded by Glenn Obery, Jane Mason and Lindy Messam, Obery has built a reputation across New Zealand for doing things differently. Rather than the typical showroom setup, the studio operates as an atelier—a space where architects and interior designers can engage directly with materials, test ideas and take their time. It’s a model that prioritises process over presentation, and it’s one that has clearly resonated with the design community across the ditch.

The Melbourne outpost will be led by Messam, who sees Cremorne’s creative precinct as a natural fit. “Melbourne’s design community is sophisticated, curious, and with a focus on the ‘interior’—a place where material and meaning are taken seriously,” she says. “It felt like the perfect canvas for the next chapter of Obery. Cremorne, with its mix of creative studios and architectural practices, offers an energy that mirrors what we built in Auckland—collaborative, nuanced, and rich with design conversation, while remaining a destination itself.”

The showroom’s portfolio is tightly curated but seriously impressive. Obery represents The Rug Company, whose collaborations with the likes of Kelly Wearstler and Dale Chihuly have made it a global name in luxury textiles; Artemest, the Italian platform connecting over 1,000 artisans with the design trade; and a considered selection of hard-surface brands led by Studio Lucy McMillan. McMillan’s sculptural ceramic tiles—handbuilt from layered stoneware clay in her Auckland studio—is represented exclusively in Australia through Obery. Her work sits alongside handmade collections from Ben Pyne, Palet and Kaufmann, forming a cohesive material offering with real depth.

What makes Obery interesting is its philosophy. This isn’t a space designed for quick transactions. The Melbourne studio will build on the immersive, atelier-style foundation established in Auckland, with an added emphasis on curated storytelling and environments designed to feel lived-in rather than staged.

As Messam puts it: “We believe exceptional design happens when material, story and intuition come together—and when designers feel truly supported by a team who loves the craft as much as they do.”

For Australian architects and designers accustomed to sourcing internationally, Obery’s arrival offers a considered local resource with a global lens, where the best design is discovered slowly, through dialogue and detail.

Obery is now working with Australian clients ahead of the opening of its Cremorne showroom this autumn.
