Text description provided by the architects. Located in Dubai's Alserkal Avenue, Gooder reimagines the traditional skatepark as a multifunctional cultural hub where skateboarding, retail, food, and workspaces coexist under one roof. The client sought a space that could bring skaters and non-skaters together, fostering community interaction while contributing to the city's creative culture, with the challenge of transforming a specialized sports facility into a flexible social environment.
The design positions the skatepark as the central anchor, surrounded by adaptable retail and hospitality areas featuring modular fixtures and movable elements, allowing the space to evolve with events, exhibitions, and changing programs. Embracing the DIY ethos of skate culture, the project uses raw, durable materials such as brick, concrete, timber, and metal, sourced locally where possible, ensuring both sustainability and long-term resilience.
A sculptural fountain inspired by traditional Damascus courtyards provides a social focal point, connecting regional heritage with contemporary youth culture. Overall, Gooder demonstrates how a skatepark can function as a flexible cultural platform, supporting sport, leisure, and creative exchange while leaving a lasting impact on the community.
