About Alya — The Story Behind the Name

They say Alya was always different.Even as a child, she would stand in the kitchen for hours, not just baking — but watching, tasting, noticing how a slight change in texture or scent could turn something simple into something unforgettable.

As she grew older, her love for pastries became more than a passion — it became a way of seeing the world. She believed that the smallest details carried the most meaning. That beauty didn’t need to shout — it just needed to be honest, soft, and well made.

People around her started to notice. Her friends would ask her to try their desserts before anyone else. Her name became a quiet reference — “If Alya likes it, it must be good.”

This project is a reflection of her.

The concept for Alya draws from the graceful strength of the name itself — meaning "high" or "exalted" in Arabic. The interior is rooted in a quiet elegance, inspired by Levantine softness, traditional arches, and natural tactility, reinterpreted through a modern architectural lens.

The shop is located in one of the quieter corners of Mecca — a place where, if you pause for a moment, you’ll catch a view of the surrounding mountains, standing still and silent in the distance. We wanted the interior of Alya to echo that same vibe.

CONCEPT

“The balance of restraint and detail”

The interior design of Alya is built on the harmony between geometric clarity and emotional softness. We combined rectangles and circles as the core design language — reflecting both structure and elegance.

The space features a double-height ceiling (7 meters), which we embraced to create openness and lightness. Brand elements were thoughtfully integrated: the signature green tone, the logo face illustration, and especially the wooden shutters that form the logo when closed over the pastry window.

Every detail — from materials to layout — was curated to reflect Alya’s identity: simple, calm, and refined.

DESIGN

“A moment of warmth and sweetness”

At its core, the design is about balance:Between geometry and softness.Between function and storytelling.Between space and identity.​​​​​​​

Three arches. A nod to Islamic geometry and classical Arabic portals — anchor the space visually and functionally. They frame the shelving and product display while drawing the eye to the central identity wall featuring the Aliya logo. This wall becomes the symbolic heart of the café.

From this angle, the zoning becomes clearer. The patisserie is not organized in a linear or rigid fashion, instead, it's shaped like a gallery of indulgence. The central floating display islands serve as sculptural moments, allowing guests to circulate freely, almost like an open-air art exhibition for pastries.

The window wall with its tall, vertical slits casts dynamic light patterns throughout the day, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. This natural play of light animates the materials and further emphasizes the handcrafted flooring.

The olive trees add organic rhythm, softening the strong verticals with their rounded foliage. Positioned intentionally at the edges of human interaction zones, they guide and embrace rather than divide.

Aliya is meant to slow you down. It’s where detail meets delicacy, and where the physical space becomes part of the dessert experience. We wanted to offer a visual and sensory retreat, grounded in cultural subtlety but shaped for a modern audience.

Alya is more than a café, it’s a calm, curated experience shaped by geometry, material, and identity. Every detail was designed to reflect the personality of the brand: elegant, quiet, and intentional.

Alya’s design appears effortless. but it’s backed by a highly coordinated architectural system, where material choices, geometry, lighting, and brand integration all work together to deliver a seamless user experience.

In Alya, the walls are quiet storytellers. Through natural finishes, gentle detailing, and thoughtful integration of brand elements, they shape an atmosphere that’s both elevated and deeply grounded

Product Display

In Alya, the product display was treated with the same level of care as the architecture itself. The goal was simple: make each pastry feel special, not as part of a crowded counter, but as a curated object.
