Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery's new flagship in the heart of the James Street precinct redefines healthcare interiors through the lens of boutique hospitality design. Interior designers Studio Collective have replaced clinical cues with a softer, more refined design language, drawing on warmth, tactile materiality, and a human-centred approach to care.

Studio Collective Director Casey Talbot says the project is the antithesis of traditional healthcare design. "We were very clear that we didn't want the space to feel clinical," Talbot says. "Our aim was to create an environment where people feel at ease the moment they arrive, more like stepping into a private home or hotel than a medical facility."

A workplace designed for people – The clinic supports staff wellbeing as deliberately as it supports patients. Back-of-house areas match the quality and materiality of front-of-house spaces, reinforcing the clinic as a place people want to work. Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Business Manager Lauren Dinneen says the new environment has transformed the daily experience for both staff and patients. "The space feels calm, fresh, and welcoming," Dinneen says. "That has a real impact on how our team feels at work and how patients experience their visit."

Materiality that supports calm and longevity – Studio Collective selected materials for both sensory impact and performance. Softly rendered walls, silver travertine, and warm timber tones establish a calm, neutral base. Warm lighting, layered textures, and a restrained palette create a space that is reassuring rather than intimidating, supporting patients through what can sometimes be an anxious experience. Studio Collective Interior Designer and project lead Olivia McDonald says subtle mid-century references appear through carpet, furniture, and detailing, adding character without dominating the space. "It's mid-century in influence, but contemporary in execution. We wanted something timeless, not trend-driven and not confronting," McDonald says.

Healthcare requirements resolved through design – While the aesthetic leans towards hospitality interiors, the clinic meets the most stringent healthcare and commercial requirements. Studio Collective drew on more than a decade of experience designing for aged care and retirement living to balance compliance, durability, and visual softness. Talbot says the designers have combined their high-end residential and institutional experience to discover materials that stand the test of time. "Our past work has taught us how to balance beauty with performance. We're constantly considering durability, compliance, and long-term use, but we always want spaces to feel uplifting," Talbot says. Handrails, contrast stair treads, and wayfinding are integrated as design elements rather than applied solutions. Decorative acoustic wall panelling, carpeted zones, and sheer window furnishings absorb sound and protect privacy within the clinic's double-height spaces.

The future of healthcare and commercial design – The project marks Studio Collective's expansion into the hospitality, hotel, and wellbeing sectors, building on their foundation in high-end residential and aged care design. Talbot says healthcare is moving closer to hospitality design. "People expect spaces that support emotional well-being as much as clinical outcomes. This project sits right at that intersection, and it's a direction we're excited to continue exploring."

The interiors by Studio Collective, including styling, finishes, and fixture selections through to furniture, lighting, and signage design, were developed in close collaboration with the project architects, Marc & Co, ensuring a consistent flow from exterior to interior. Finishes and details subtly reference the building façade, reinforcing the continuity across the project. Located in one of Brisbane's most active urban precincts, the Brisbane Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery demonstrates how design can reshape healthcare environments into spaces defined by calm, clarity, and care.
