East Kangqiao Station is situated in the southern part of Zhangjiang Science City of ShangHai, at the heart of the Outer Ring Ecological Corridor, with the green belt of the Hengmian area immediately to its north. The site is embedded in a natural setting of dense waterways, fields, and woodland. Guided by the concept of “Emerging from the Wetland,” the design allows the above-ground station to grow out of the natural fabric of the Hengmian wetland, coupling urban development with natural habitat and creating a boundless station where city and landscape merge.

01 Merging City with Wetland, Healing the Boundary
The Hengmian area first emerged as a waterside settlement in the Tang Dynasty and flourished into a prosperous market town during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its landscape of dense waterways, interwoven woodland, and farmland has endured to the present day, gradually evolving into one of Shanghai’s most distinctive wetland park belts. In 2019, construction of the Shanghai Airport Link Line began in phases. As the southern gateway to Zhangjiang Science City, East Kangqiao Station is located along the southern edge of the Hengmian green belt, serving nearby residents and workers while also acting as an important entry point to the area’s wetland parks.

Yet, in order to serve the underground linear rail infrastructure, the above-ground facilities were arranged along both sides of Kangren Road, forming an engineering belt nearly 700 meters in length. Embedded within the green ecological setting, this belt appeared as a “grey patch,” intensifying the opposition between the built urban area and the natural ecological zone. Conventional above-ground metro facilities typically prioritise efficiency and speed, and their forms tend to be rigid and standardised, inserting “generic symbols” into the landscape and producing spatial fragmentation, reinforced boundaries, and environmental heterogeneity.

In response, the design adopts “merging city with wetland” as its core strategy. Through an integrated environmental approach, it seeks to dissolve the divide between infrastructure and ecology, repair fragmented ecological edges, and reconnect the station to the wetland’s spatial network, transforming the area from a condition of separation between city and landscape to one of coexistence.

02 Weaving Paths through Fields, Shaping Space via Paths
The above-ground facilities of East Kangqiao Station include four metro entrances, twelve emergency exits, two accessible elevators, three outdoor VRV units, one cooling tower, and four ventilation pavilion clusters. Shaped by different engineering requirements, these elements are distributed along both sides of the road, appearing as a series of dispersed grey fragments.

Drawing on the interwoven landscape tissue of the Hengmian wetland, the design establishes an organizational logic of “Weaving Paths through Fields” and a spatial system of “Shaping Space via Paths.” The station layout unfolds along both natural and urban routes, linking the wetland’s southwest entrance, the station’s main entrances, the pedestrian system along Kangren Road, and the internal paths of the wetland park. Together with waterside paths and water-based circulation routes, these elements form a multi-layered network connecting station, city, and landscape, enabling seamless movement between the urban fabric and the wetland.

Water canals are among the most characteristic spatial elements of the local environment. They not only organize the ground plane and guide flows, but also serve as vernacular prototypes for shaping edges and everyday routes. Drawing on the generative logic of canals, the design weaves facilities of different sizes, slow-mobility systems, and open spaces into a cohesive whole through the growth and extension of paths.

Water canals are also taken as formal prototypes in the making of space. The main entrances are linked with ventilation shafts and emergency exits by means of arched modular elements, creating continuous landscape interfaces and spatial fields. Isolated ventilation structures and the cooling tower are enclosed by curved planted interfaces and integrated with corridors, garden pavilions, and pause points, transforming them into landscape features within the wetland. The orientation of openings, the turns of the interfaces, and variations in roof height all respond to surrounding paths, waterways, and sightlines, allowing visitors to move naturally between the wetland and the city.

03 Raising Pavilions above Water, Bringing Nature to the City
In the shaping of individual structures, the design adopts a light, modest, and permeable approach in response to the site’s low-lying terrain, flowing waterscape, and groves of metasequoias. From this emerges the image of “floating pavilions above the wetland.” The station and its ancillary facilities are conceived as lightly placed structures set within the wetland and woodland: while meeting functional requirements, they create nodes for shelter, pause, transition, and viewing. Visually, they remain as open and transparent as possible, maintaining a constant visual connection with both the city and the wetland landscape.

To coordinate facilities of varying scales while responding to the demand for rapid rail infrastructure construction, the design refines the water-canal prototype into an arched modular system based on a 3-meter module.

Horizontally, the modules generate station entrances, corridors, long pavilions, and footbridges; vertically, they function as structural supports and planting frames. Some roofs rise to form accessible landscape terraces, while others are treated as green roofs that blend naturally into the wetland setting. At four points along the roof, concealed recirculating waterfall devices are integrated with ground-level pools, creating gentle cascades when activated and evoking the poetic image of “water falling from the eaves, pavilions floating above the wetland.”

In terms of landscape experience, the design choreographs the surrounding scenery through a looping sequence of movement, allowing the wild charm of the wetland to intertwine with urban life. Continuous outdoor eaves not only provide shade and shelter for daily commuters, but also serve as public leisure spaces within the wetland park. Spaces beneath the eaves, vertical greenery, viewing platforms, and steps descending toward the water create a natural transition between station and park. From the roof, visitors can look out across the wetland from above the treetops, taking in the full panorama of the city and woodland beyond.

By the Water, Among the Treetops
As commuting, recreation, and viewing naturally converge in one place, East Kangqiao Station transcends its purely infrastructural role and becomes an open interface connecting city and wetland, everyday life and landscape. It settles by the water and extends toward the treetops, responding to the demands of urban infrastructure while preserving the openness and poetry of the wetland. In this way, infrastructure is no longer merely a technical system that divides the site, but a public realm grown from the landscape fabric itself, gently and enduringly re-establishing connections between people and landscape, and between the city and its environment.
