Alta North is a house in Alta, WY, United States, designed by Prospect Studio as a contemporary mountain retreat for a family of five. Designed in 2024 at the edge of Caribou-Targhee National Forest, it organizes living, sleeping, and service zones along a sheltered boardwalk entry, pairing broad landscape views with board-formed concrete and a deliberately modest scale for the region.
About Alta North
Set at the edge of Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Alta North Residence is conceived as a contemporary mountain retreat for a family of five, with a close relationship to its surroundings. A central boardwalk acts as the organizing datum, with a recessed entry placed at its center and sheltered from heavy snowfall.
At the heart of the house, the main living area opens to opposing curtain walls that frame long views of the landscape, recalling the spatial ideas of Mies van der Rohe’s Resor House collages. On either side, board-formed concrete masses contain the house’s essential functions, including a gallery, pantry, and a skylit shower in the primary bath.
The western-facing primary suite is arranged as a quieter retreat, with a live-edge walnut desk and lounge seating oriented toward the wetlands. A pass-through closet leads to the ensuite bath, where a glass-backed vanity is positioned for views to the Tetons.
The guest wing keeps a compact footprint and brings together an intimate den, a four-bed bunkroom, and three guest suites for family gatherings. A detached garage with a gear room supports the household’s active routines, while a geothermal system and triple-glazed windows reduce energy demand. In a region often defined by oversized houses, Alta North Residence takes a more measured approach to scale, showing how a smaller home can still feel generous.
