Scotch Chalet is a compact chalet in Québec, Canada, by CARTA. Set on a forested plateau in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, the project answers a Nordic climate with a restrained form, pale grey cladding, and a plan that supports both gathering and quiet retreat. Its low profile and light-filled interior give the cabin a calm, durable presence in the trees.

About Scotch Chalet
Perched on a plateau deep in the forest, the cabin meets the site with restraint. Pale grey wood cladding, a low silhouette, and long views into the trees set the tone from the first approach.
Scotch Chalet is a chalet in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, Québec, Canada, designed by CARTA. It answers a Nordic climate with a compact, durable form and a plan that supports both shared time and private retreat.
The project occupies less than 100 m² (1,076 sq ft), reflecting a lean use of resources and a preference for flexibility over excess. That small footprint helps the cabin stay efficient without sacrificing comfort, and it keeps the building discreet within the landscape.
The roofline shifts to place the primary bedroom and office upstairs, opposite the entrance. This move keeps the arrival side low along the ascending dirt road, while the taller elevations open toward the forest with expansive glazing that stays largely hidden from the path. The result is a building that reveals itself gradually as one moves around the site, with each facade responding to its own orientation.
Inside, the plan is organized as a sequence of carved volumes rather than a simple string of rooms. A longitudinal axis links the entrances, while a transverse axis brings daylight across the central living area. Beneath a cathedral ceiling, the living room, kitchen, and dining room share one open interior and look out to a 180-degree panorama.
A skylight draws light down to the stair and the central room, reinforcing the sense of continuity through the cabin. Wood paneling lines most of the interior, giving the rooms a warm, enclosing character that recalls traditional cabin construction.
