The installation reimagines shared connections and objects for cats and humans through playful forms and rigorous scalar logic. By exploring a unified interface and a simplified prototype for domestic facilities, it advocates for a more sustainable and inclusive design ethos.

Installation Concept
At the 9th Bi-City Biennale of UrbanismArchitecture (UABB) main venue, GDH City · Kingway Brewery, the Special Section comprises six distinctive units: Footprints of All Sounds, Book Curating, Cosmo Uniforms, Circular Co-creation, Stray Animal Home, and Museum Linkage Plan.

Presented within the “Stray Animal Home” unit, “The Adapter Units” reinterprets domesticity from a feline perspective. As intimate yet mysterious family members, cats operate on a scale and spatial language often distinct from human furniture. By researching the dual-scalar requirements of both species, the installation seeks a unified interface and a simplified prototype for domestic facilities.

Companion & Co-sharer

Pets have become psychological projections of urban longings, serving as intimate family members that fulfill the need for companionship and emotional regulation. Having transitioned passively from the wild to the city, they now inhabit “human-centric” rigid spaces. Within these predefined dwellings, pets spontaneously seek out residual spaces for rest and play, co-existing with humans in the urban fabric. As companions and charismatic”protagonists”of the home, they possess distinct preferences and should not be confined to a singular, fixed space.

Modular Skeleton & Skin
Starting from the scale of everyday furniture, stools, chairs, tables, and shelves are deconstructed into functional interfaces, structural supports, and residual voids. Design truly begins when the user selects a skeleton: functional needs dictate form, while the co-living dynamics, preferences, and environment lead to the final outcome. The initial settings of the “Skeleton” are minimized, rendering it modular and standardized for maximum extensibility and adaptability.

A Collaborative “Crafting Game”

Contemporary pet furniture often arrives as “finished products” of industrialization, whose monotonous materials and mechanical language frequently become “leftovers” in limited living environments. By extracting a basic “Skeleton” and utilizing flexible components, objects are transformed into shared artifacts through active user participation. This skeleton acts as a set of predefined game rules, guiding participants to build functional volumes, while the “Skin”—be it cardboard, old clothes, hemp rope, or yarn—is left to the creative discretion of both humans and pets. As a “semi-finished” entity, the unit gains the potential for metabolic growth and continuous adaptation within the home.

Potential for Growth
The standardization of the skeleton and the diversity of materials expand the potential of “The Adapter Units” into the public realm. In dense urban fabrics, community “grey spaces” serve as hubs for human activity; however, once the crowds disperse, these areas become sanctuaries for stray animals. Through modular concatenation and stacking, the units can evolve into public infrastructure such as benches, shelving, or long tables, providing diverse and engaging interfaces for animals within the public sphere.

On-Site
“The Adapter Units” is more than a set of modular furniture; it is an experiment in sustainable design. By reconstructing scalar logic, we aim to blur the boundaries between “human” and “animal” spaces, seeking a symbiotic interface for different species beneath the rigid shell of the city. This care extends from private residences to community corners, allowing design to function as a true “adapter” connecting diverse forms of life.
