At Bangalore’s edge, this 7800 sqft house by Vandana Taluru, founder and principal architect at 4Brick Studio, is a refuge for spirit and art alike. The homeowners, doctors by profession, wanted a space to revitalise themselves and to house the many treasures they’d collected over time. Anchored in lush greenery and opening out to a golf course on one side, the home is crafted in stone and lime plaster and enriched with antiques. The house is awash in natural light and ventilation flooding through an expansive central courtyard. With well-being as the chief design intent, the building is a sanctuary of strength and grace dressed in sandstone, nodding gently to the endurance of craft and material.

A serendipitous detour in Jaipur led to a profound discovery. While on a search for antiques, Vandana and her clients stumbled upon a Gwalior Mint quarry, where discarded slabs lay cast aside. Vandana’s eye caught the grains of an “imperfect” stone’s colour variation, which had caused it to be disregarded at the quarry yard. The stone had a distinct character that gave the project an irreplicable spirit. Chosen over artefacts, the rescued stone was left untreated, each slab hand-chipped, wrapping the exterior in a skin of honest material.

Inside, the artefacts and antiques are not curated as static showpieces but are integrated as symbiotic companions, heightening atmosphere and spatial intent. At the entrance, two 50-year-old earthen pots frame the arrival with sculptural presence, their granary past lending the threshold a quiet weight of memory. The foyer is anchored by a 5-foot-tall Nataraja, mounted in a scooped recess in the wall, weaving the statue into the architectural skin. This embedding of objects transforms them into spatial devices, punctuating walls, marking transitions, and mediating scale.

Across the interiors, the dialogue between artefact and architecture is one of reciprocity. In living rooms deliberately free of televisions, fragments of a pre-independence wood chariot and weathered wooden printing blocks animate the walls, layering surfaces with texture and narrative. These objects temper the austerity of stone and lime plaster, balancing raw materiality with cultural resonance, and allowing each room to evolve as an immersive environment where history and design coalesce. A 200-year-old wooden chest lies open in the master bedroom, reminiscent of 19th-century Lahore. Such intimacy of lived heritage where objects are felt, not just seen, and are woven into the home’s rhythm and daily life.

The central void channels the home’s vitals, light, ventilation, circulation, and spatial coherence. The ground floor unfolds around the courtyard, with the main living room, dining area, and open kitchen embracing it, while the formal living and foyer act as thresholds guarding intimate functions. Rising from the ground up, the two-storey puncture becomes a binding force. The upper floor holds two bedrooms, a bonsai terrace garden, and an amphitheatre that peeks inward. Its stepped seating culminating as a wall creates a living green backdrop for those on the ground floor. Echoing the exterior, the courtyard walls are clad in hand-slit quartz sandstone, their subtle shifts in levels adding depth and texture. Overlooking it all, a venerable Thanjavur painting presides from the gallery above, its watchful gaze grounding the home in heritage.

The building breathes not just through its natural ventilation, but also through the calm it emanates from a design both simple and enduring. Its refined interiors become a canvas for stories to unfold. Art, stone, and architecture converge to form a layered presence, unassuming yet deeply rewarding. This is a home where material honesty meets timeless character, where stillness finds its own quiet poetry. Drenched in daylight, encircled by verdure, and scattered with treasures, the Sandstone home endures as an imprint of texture, time, and soulful living.
