House SP in Merano, Italy, by monovolume architecture + design, is a 2025 house renovation and expansion that reshapes an older building into two homes. The project replaces the first floor and attic with a new arrangement that puts natural light, garden views, and privacy at the center of daily life.
About House SP
House SP is a renovation and expansion project that gives an existing residence a new spatial order. The ground floor remains in place, while the upper levels are rebuilt to introduce two separate homes and a clearer relationship to the garden.
The first floor becomes a spacious apartment, and the second and third floors form an elegant duplex. A new concept places natural light and exterior connections at the center, while the north facade stays closed to reduce street noise and strengthen privacy.
A terrace wraps through the branches of an old walnut tree, bringing the tree into everyday use rather than treating it as a distant view. The opening toward the garden reinforces that connection, and the outdoor stair links the levels with a direct, legible move between floors.
On the top level, a panoramic terrace extends the living area toward the surrounding landscape. Large glass surfaces, white plaster facades, black metal roof cladding, and black-brown railings give the house a restrained palette, while the folded roof shape adds depth and shifts the light across the volumes.
Energy performance is part of the project’s structure, not an added layer. Triple-insulated facades and windows, together with a heat pump system, support a stable interior climate through the year. The result is a house that balances renewal, comfort, and a clear reading of its built form.
