UNSDG Goal: Good health and Well-being
Issue:
Tobacco consumption is a global health concern that causes diseases and deaths among millions of people. Despite extensive efforts to curb its use, tobacco continues to exact a devastating toll, contributing to millions of deaths annually worldwide. The addictive nature of nicotine which is found in tobacco makes it more difficult for smokers to quit smoking.
DESIGN STATEMENT
To design a motivational space by evoking a mix of emotions and using 5 senses in the visitors’ experience, i aim to raise awareness about the consequences of smoking thus inspiring and motivating smokers to quit smoking and warn non-smokers to not pick up smoking. this space aims to encourage visitors to reflect on themselves and ultimately make the decision to quit smoking through emotional exhibits while offering a range of engaging activities to support those on their journey to quitting. on the other hand, families and friends can also play a part by providing support and encouraging people to quit smoking after understanding the serious consequences of smoking.
DESIGN CONCEPT
To create a contrast of emotions that are evoked in different spaces between negative (fear) and positive (empathy) relating to smoking throughout the visitors’ journey which will allow visitors to realise the seriousness and consequences of smoking. using negative emotions like fear and uneasiness to portray a space which will show the scary reality of consequences of smoking through a storyline of smokers attempting to quit smoking. using positive emotions like motivation and empathy will then convey a message to people that they are able to quit smoking and thus encourage them to do so.
SYNOPSIS
Unlike usual exhibitions and campaigns that show visuals to emphasize on the harmful effects of smoking thus promoting anti smoking, my project will be an exhibition that provides a multi-sensory experience that plays with a mix of negative and positive emotions visitors can feel hence conveying a message to them that they need to quit smoking. starting with a space that evokes negative emotions such as fear and uneasiness, it emphasizes the seriousness and scariness of smoking which urges them to quit smoking while following a storyline of how smokers attempted to quit smoking. after going through that, visitors will feel an immediate contrast of emotions as they come out to a space that evokes positive emotions such as fun and motivation and also empathy through storytelling in the end alongside with interactive programmes that will help people when in the journey of quitting smoking.
