Syncopation
I have a passion for drawing, and Syncopation serves as my personal codex featuring 200 expressive pieces that define my visual identity as a designer. Through creations inspired by the prompts "Line," "Shape," and "Form," I've realized that my visual style is notably free-spirited.
Process
I spent each week producing a series of 60 visualisations, Some were inspired by my surroundings, while others involved experimenting with different tools to achieve various brush strokes. A cotton bud, empty mug, or even a set of chopsticks could perform as a paintbrush, creating soft strokes or even loud bursts of colour. It was an experience that eliminated any clear boundaries, and gave me the creative freedom to make mistakes, experiment, and sift through the rubble to find my visual style.
I’m also interested in music, and noted music’s similarity to visual communication in terms of the way they are able to tell stories and convey a variety of moods. Hence each chapter in this codex was named after a term in music that best describes what the chapter is about. For instance, the chapter “Mellow” discusses how it embodies many layers, and how it appears in how paint travels across each page in washes, how charcoal slowly fades into nothingness as I glide my fingers across the canvas. In the process, Mellow lines communicate a subtle yet soothing tone in the absence of bold, bright colours, akin to how mellow tunes may sound to the ears.
