MOLN Lounge Chair

MOLN Lounge Chair si a soft, cloud inspired seating design that explores comfort through form, material, and detail.

The chair translates the feeling of sitting on a cloud into a sculptural lounge piece rounded, embracing, and visually calm designed for moments of rest in contemporary spaces.

MOLN - Swedish for "cloud"

MOLN is a design exploration inspired by the softness and lightness of clouds and cotton.

The project aims to transform an abstract feeling of comfort into a tangible lounge chair that visually communicates softness while maintaining a calm, mature presence suitablefir modern interiors.

Rather than focusing only on physical comfort, MOLN is designed to evoke relaxation at first glance, through its form, proportions, and material expression.

Design Intention​​​​​​​ - Softness You Can See

The core idea behind MOLN is to make softness visible.​​​​​​​

This is achieved through :

- Rounded, Continuous surfaces without sharp edges

-Voluminous proportions that feel padded and welcoming

- A form that gently embraces the user, creating a sense of being held rather than simply seated

The challengewas to balance friendliness and elegance creating a chair taht feels warm and approachable, yet not overly playful or childish.

Form Development

The form development process began with simple, rounded geometries inspired my a single soft mass. Through iterative refinement, proportions were carefully adjusted to achieve a harmonious balance between visual weight and softness.

The final form appears as a single continuous volume, where the seat, backrest, and armrest are seamlessly connected.

The monolithic yet soft silhouette reinforces the idea of comfort and calmness while keeping the design visually clean.

Piping Detail - Defining the Form

Due to the large upholstered surface area, an additional detail was necessary  to prevent the design from feeling visually flat or monotonous.​​​​​​​

Piping details were introduced to:

- Break the visual softness

- Accentuate the curvature of the form

- Add subtle contrast without disrupting the overall calm aethetic

The Piping lines held define the chair's structure and enhance its silhouette, making the form more readable while preserving its softness.

Materials & Construction

MOLN is constructed with both comfort and form control in mind.

- Main structure: Wooden frame

- Primary padding: Polyurethane foam for support and durability

- Outer layer: Softer foam to refine the shape and provide a comfortable seating experience

- Upholstery: Fabric selected to enhance the soft and warm visual quality

The layered construction allows precise control over both ergonomics and visual form.

Base Design

The lounge chair sits on a circular solid wood base that visually grounds the soft upper volume.​​​​​​​

- Solid wood construction

- Rounded edges to maintain a soft visual language

- A low-profile proportion that supports the chair without drawing attention away from the main form

Context & Usage

MOLN Lounge Chair is designed fir contemporary office environments amd creative spaces where short moments of rest are essential.
