This project is inspired by the philosophy of the four elements — Earth, Water, WIND, Fire (ดิน น้ำ ลม ไฟ), translated into spatial flow, material texture, and lighting ambience. The owner wished to transform an old Thai wooden house into a 'Private Spa and Onsen' , so our design focused on preserving the charm of the existing structure while weaving in the calm, balanced energy of the elements. The result is a space that feels warm, grounded, and naturally serene from the moment guests arrive.
The journey begins right at the front fence, where we redesigned the levels and layout to create a gentle visual guide leading toward the Reception. This subtle direction line invites guests into the space seamlessly, setting the tone before they even enter the house.
Upon entering, guests are welcomed by the reception counter leading into the Living & Waiting Area, complete with a cozy Snack Corner serving warm tea.
Preserving the Original Thai's home Character
A key highlight is the preserved original window frames from the old Thai house. These windows allow natural daylight to fill the room from multiple directions, creating a bright yet serene atmosphere that complements the airy, wind-inspired theme.
Wind-Inspired Sculpture
The double-height ceiling features a sculptural fabric installation — curved, layered, and softly flowing to mimic the movement of wind. Hidden warm lighting elevates the texture and creates soft shadows, adding dimension and enhancing the overall sense of calm.
From the reception area, turning right leads into the hallway of the Private Treatment Rooms,
each named after one of the elements:
Varee (วารี) – Water
Pattavi (ปถวี) – Earth
Tejo (เตโช) – Fire
Vata Vayu (วาตะ วายุ) – Wind
Among these, Tejo is the largest suite, featuring its own Private Onsen, representing warmth, energy, and rejuvenation — the essence of the Fire element.
Texture Matters
To make the space feel tactile and expressive, we carefully selected textures that add dimension --
Hand-applied plaster that creates organic patterns and soft movement on the walls
These surfaces reflect light beautifully and contribute to the spa’s warm, earthy harmony.
Second Floor — Pattavi Room (Earth)
A softly lit staircase leads to the shared treatment room Pattavi, featuring multiple beds
with linen curtains for privacy.
The highlight here is the linen ceiling installation, which works beautifully with the warm, dramatic lighting—casting gentle shadows and adding an earthy, grounding tone to the space.Looking back toward the staircase reveals a perfect alignment between the upper installation and the wind-inspired artwork downstairs—a moment where all elements visually connect.
In the hallway, we preserved the original wooden slats from the old house’s façade. These slats blend beautifully into the new design language and subtly frame the light entering from the windows, adding warmth and character to the circulation space.
and here is another room on the second floor, ‘Vayo’ Privated room.
Lighting Concept
As you can see, the overall mood uses a dramatic–dim lighting concept.Because this is a spa environment, the lighting throughout the house is intentionally dramatic yet gentle, creating a soothing, calm experience for every guest.
Seen as a whole, the design of VATA VAYU weaves the four elements into every detail — creating a spa experience that feels intentional, soothing, and seamlessly connected.
