Project focused on style and ambiance exploration

School project that asked us to go further than our personal, habitual style.

The point being trying new things and identify what makes a style unique, so we can accentuate traits of our own.

We had to create three different illustrations, with the same composition, to see in what context or different elements can create very distinct images, while the core being the same.

First step of research

The most hard part in this assignment is to create the base, as it needs to be versatile enough for every ambiance to work.

It wasn't required to find an interesting composition, although I tasked myself to still make it interesting. Therefore I picked plants, as I know composition can get really crowded, perfect to get mysterious or scary, hinding behind plants, or to have a nice luxuriant picture.

From left to right:

Final image A

Warm ambiance, no lineart, weak values contrast, lighthearted and colorful. Lots of textures tried a style ressembling dry pastels (digital).

Second image being a variant of the original, as it's interesting to see the difference that white sculpting light can make, withouth it the image looks more 2d, which is also an intringing option.

Final image B

Foggy, swampy, mysterious, and magical ambiance. Pixel art, lineart and cell shading style.

Second image is a variant, tried a more sunrise ambiance.

Final image C

Cold, scary, uncanny, dark, monochrome and heavy contrast values. Lineless, painting/ rendered style, the style I tend to lean on the most.

Second image is also a variant from it's original, warmer tones but still not heartwarming, as the red ressembles blood, which could let know the viewer what's about to happen.
