2020 Final Studio B: the Po River
The ecological emergency and climate change require urgent local and global responses in the short and long term. Rapid urbanization and related phenomena of abandonment require new measures for soil protection and possible reuse of existing buildings. The political and social crisis is progressively leading to participatory design among citizens, public and private stakeholders.
The theme of the final studio is set on the longest river in Italy, where students proactively investigate on potentials and problems by working on various scales to develop vision, strategies, and interventions for these identified issues.
Phase I. Research by Design
Understanding the river's natural and manmade environmental characteristics and changes throughout the decades.
Synthesis of our research
Recognizing the use of woods as a solution to the discovered potentials and problems to our investigation.
Phase II. Design by Research
Developing strategies and identifying key locations as nodes for intervention.
Focusing on Polesine Parmense
An abandoned quarry site afforested and transformed into an eco-tourism destination.
