Turrella North Art Garden
The “Turrella North Art Garden” is a submission for a student graduation proposition at UNSW. The proposition forms a year-long design research aiming to develop and present a comprehensive proposal of the chosen site within the Bardwell Valley Parklands and Wolli Creek Green Grid Corridor (BPWCGGC) green corridor.
The chosen site, Turrella North, forms an industrial-commercial zone with an area of about 70,000 sqm, located approximately 10 km south of Sydney CBD, in the suburb of Turrella within Bardwell Valley Parklands and Wolli Creek in Bayside Council.
Identifying the Problems
The problems in this project were identified in 3 categories:
Parklands and Greenspaces:
Parklands and green open spaces occupy only less than 6% in 5km buffer and only 14% in the 800m buffer. The analysis of NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) demonstrates a low vegetation index in Turrella North.
Flora and Fauna:
Many flora species, such as the Cabbage Palm, have disappeared from Turrella since 1828. Additionally, the revegetation of exotic species in Turrella has caused an imbalance in food availability throughout the year, endangering animal species such as the Golden Bell Frog, small birds, Bush-tail possums, and Grey-headed Flying Foxes. Grey-headed Flying Foxes are currently relying on high-carbohydrate foods found in exotic trees, and are not following their migratory behaviour to find the food they need.
Land Surface Temperature:
Land surface Temperature analysis shows that Turrella North is located in an industrial land zone and demonstrates the highest level of surface temperature along the heat profile of the corridor.
Overall, Research shows that the site suffers from dense urbanism leading to isolated forest stands, endangered flora and fauna species, and increased UHI.
Vision & Design Pillars
My vision is to create a green place celebrating art and heritage by focusing on 5 design pillars: 1) Connect fragmented local urban forest; 2) Increase biodiversity in the area; 3) Create pleasant microclimate; 4) Create diverse multipurpose spaces; 5) Pay homage to local heritage & history.
Tackling the Issues
Considering the young demographics, international travel makers, and rich cultural heritage, the design proposes a future scenario carrying sustainability.
Design Zones
The design includes 5 zones:
Carpark: includes 175 car spots with EV chargers and PV panels.
Art & Education: provides the infrastructure to engage artists, visitors, and community in respect for nature, raise public awareness, and research.
Lawn: a place for the community to come together for individual/group activities such as nature painting, yoga, fitness, reading, or small daytime concerts and for families to have a picnic, a play date, or a daytime wedding.
Glasshouse Nursery: an effective area for growing and showcasing plants and vegetation which cannot eventuate to their full potential in the Australian climate. The nursery can host seasonal flower shows and educational programs.
Ballater Chinese Garden: Pays homage to two main recent periods of local history. The garden is a space to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere while walking amongst bamboo trees, Chinese Pistache and Chinese Elm.
Australian Garden: the closest section of the Turrella North Art Garden to the existing green corridor and has been designed to resurrect natural glory of the area and is named to remind visitors of preserving local nature.
The elevated walkway plus terrain changes across the garden provide vantage points to enjoy diverse views of Wolli Creek, Wolli Creek Regional Park, and the sculpture walk. Sculptures in this garden are the artwork of Australian & international artists promoting respect for nature and environment.
Conclusion
To sum up, the desired outcome aims to enhance the diversity of flora & fauna, develop economic and social opportunities, and increase the number of visitors, resulting in a stronger Turrella community.
