Cool-Climate Contemporary Landscape – Blue Mountains
Set within the dramatic cool-climate environment of the Blue Mountains, this project was designed to create a seamless transition between a contemporary mid-century inspired home and the surrounding native bushland. The clients envisioned a garden that felt intrinsically connected to the landscape—where curated plantings met the wild edges of the adjoining bush and where native species blended effortlessly into the designed spaces.
An Evolving, Site-Responsive Design
From the outset, the clients chose to live in the home for several years before committing to a full design, allowing the garden to evolve organically. This collaborative, long-term approach proved invaluable. Observing the site through multiple seasons revealed critical details—water flow, leaching, wind corridors—that informed every aspect of the final design. The result is a landscape shaped not only by aesthetic intent but by a deep understanding of how the site behaves throughout the year.
A Striking Arrival Experience
One of the first design elements developed was the expansive driveway garden. With a long approach to the home, the clients wanted a bold sense of arrival. This area showcases predominantly Japanese plant species, chosen for their structure, form, and compatibility with the cool-climate setting. The driveway sets the tone for the garden experience, offering year-round beauty and a dramatic welcome.
Design Style
The garden expresses a contemporary sensibility softened by natural materials and a strong connection to place. Parkland-style plantings and sculptural hardscaping sit comfortably within the bushland surrounds, creating a harmonious dialogue between architecture and environment.
Key Features
Roaming parkland gardens that wrap around the home, flowing into a generous tiled entertaining terrace with expansive bushland views.
Spectacular hand-forged steel entrance gates by a local artisan, set within curved recycled brick and sandstone-clad walls that create a memorable threshold.
Hand-shaped ironstone walls crafted from local materials, reinforcing the project’s commitment to regional character and craftsmanship.
A productive kitchen garden featuring wicking beds for water efficiency, complemented by fruit trees placed throughout the property.
Rusted steel edging used consistently to create crisp lines and subtle transitions between mulched garden beds and manicured lawns.
Lighting & Atmosphere
Low-voltage lighting is strategically placed along the driveway, feature steps, and key garden views. These subtle illuminations allow the landscape to be enjoyed safely and beautifully both day and night, highlighting form, texture, and seasonal colour.
Hardscaping
Concrete: Over 500m² of exposed aggregate driveway and pathways provide safe, slip-resistant access across the site. These surfaces complement the original, weathered driveway, maintaining continuity while offering a refined upgrade.
Paving: Large-format tiles define the front entry and rear entertaining spaces, creating calm, elegant surfaces that visually extend the living areas. The rear terrace—complete with a high skillion roof and timber cladding—acts as an outdoor room ideal for year-round relaxation.
Screening: Mature conifer hedging on three sides of the property forms a natural windbreak and a lush green backdrop for garden views.
Walling: Ironstone book-leaf retaining walls subtly reshape the land, creating level changes and guiding the natural flow of the garden.
