Project Overview

Seoul Design Garden : International Garden Exposition Suncheon Bay Korea 2023

Suncheonman National Garden was designated as Korea’s first national garden following the 2013 Expo. After successfully winning the bid for the Expo 20 years ago, the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo was held a decade later, establishing an international garden model. As part of this event, the "Seoul Design Garden" was created to promote Seoul’s garden culture and the identity of DDP.순천만국가정원은 2013년 박람회 이후 국가 정원 1호로 지정되었습니다. 지난 20년 박람회 유치에 성공하여, 10년만에 개최하는 국제적 정원 모델을 조성한 2023 순천만국제정원박람회에 서울시의 정원 문화와 DDP의 정체성을 알리기 위한 ‘서울 디자인 정원’ 을 조성하였습니다.

Concept

Hangang River / DDP / Suncheonman Bay

한강의 ‘선’과 사람들의 시선과 생각을 흐르게 하는 DDP의 ‘선’의 개념을 함축해, 서울과 한국 디자인을 상징하는 공간과 선의 의미를 컨셉으로 설정하였습니다.

순천만의 자연스러운 물길 흐름을 접목해 한강과 DDP의 선이 조화를 이루는 역동적 공간을 기획하였습니다.

Design Experience Strategy

Linear Composition & Spatial Composition

We connected the spatial composition and sculptural concept of DDP, the heart of Seoul’s design landscape, with the wetland formations of Suncheonman. The architectural lines of DDP, the waterways of the Han River, and the water paths of Suncheonman — the event venue — were unified through linear composition and sculptural elements. As a symbolic space representing Seoul’s design hub, it embodies the value and influence of design culture and industry. In particular, to suit the spatial characteristics of the garden expo, we actively incorporated the color red to express the passion of both the community and individuals, maximizing visual prominence and presence at the event.

서울 디자인의 중심지인 DDP의 공간 구성과 조각적 개념을 순천만의 습지 지형과 연결했습니다. DDP의 건축적 선, 한강의 수로, 그리고 행사 개최지인 순천만의 물길을 선형 구성과 조각적 요소를 통해 하나로 이어냈습니다. 서울 디자인 허브를 상징하는 공간으로서 디자인 문화와 산업에 가치를 더하고 영향력을 형성하는 의미를 담았습니다. 특히 정원 박람회라는 공간적 특성에 대비되는 붉은색을 적극 활용하여 공동체와 개인의 열정을 표현하고, 박람회 현장에서 시각적 주목성과 존재감을 극대화하였습니다.

Plant Selection

Acer palmatum was used as the main planting, and to maximize visual prominence by emphasizing red tones, Cornus alba sibirica, Nandina, and Pyracantha were planted together. These various red plants were arranged to naturally guide the gaze of visitors through seasonal color changes, providing a vivid and intense design experience throughout the space.

Acer palmatum (단풍나무)를 주 식재로 사용하고, 붉은색을 강조해 시각적 주목성을 극대화하기 위해 Cornus alba sibirica(흰말채나무), Nandina(남천), Pyracantha(피라칸사)를 함께 식재하였습니다. 다양한 붉은 식재들이 계절에 따라 변화하는 색감을 통해 관람객의 시선을 자연스럽게 이끌고, 공간 전체에 강렬한 디자인 경험을 제공하도록 구성하였습니다.

Exhibition Experience Strategy

Use of Installation

To prevent any sense of discord within the garden space clustered with red plantings, we designed installations using red fabric and incorporated corten steel structures with a rusted texture. The fabric structures continuously impart red tones to the space regardless of seasonal changes, naturally guiding visual separation and reinforcing the overall unity of the garden composed of red plantings.

붉은 식재가 군집된 정원 공간에서 이질감이 느껴지지 않도록 붉은 패브릭을 활용한 설치물을 고안하고 녹슨 질감의 코텐스틸 구조물을 함께 적용하였습니다.

패브릭 구조물은 계절 변화에 영향받지 않고 공간에 지속적으로 붉은 색감을 부여하며, 
자연스럽게 시각적 분리를 유도해 붉은 식재로 구성된 정원에 통일성을 강화했습니다.
