ASCE 2020 Concrete Canoe Competition - The Voyager
The annual ASCE Concrete Canoe competition provides engineering students with the opportunity to gain practical experience by challenging students across the nation and overseas to compete with one another.
The goal of the annual competition is to construct a concrete canoe while displaying an understanding of structural stability, hydrodynamics, cost-efficiency, project management and innovation. A team displays their understanding of the aforementioned concepts by creating a Technical Proposal that is to be submitted for evaluation alongside the concrete canoe, aesthetic stands, and a display.
The Technical Proposal for our concrete canoe - NYU's Voyager - conveys the inspiration behind the project's theme, provides a detailed analysis of the reasoning behind the build design, and the new milestones and challenges that the NYU team took on in order to challenge the conventions of concrete canoe design.
Unfortunately due to the arrival of COVID-19, the ASCE 2020 Concrete Canoe Competition was canceled and the NYU team was unable to complete the construction of the canoe. However, the team eventually completed the construction of the canoe, having revised its aesthetic design now that the competition was no longer active. The canoe is set to be placed within the halls of NYU Tandon's Civil Engineering department as a display piece.
