Text description provided by the architects. Lèvanzo is the renovation project of a single-family villa located in Caprarica, in the province of Lecce. Set within the context of a small Salento village, the house was redesigned for a young professional couple with the goal of updating both the functions and the aesthetics of a villa with typically 1970s lines.
The original building was characterized by a strong presence of accessory elements: the semicircular living room was topped by an octagonal tiled canopy, echoed by a series of small overhangs protecting the entrance veranda and the openings facing the garden. Over time, this complex arrangement had ended up weighing down the overall architectural reading of the house.
The project intervenes through a process of formal simplification, achieved by removing canopies and overhangs. This gesture restores compositional clarity, highlighting the interlocking of the cylindrical volume of the living room with the rectangular volume of the sleeping area, both rendered essential through a uniform white plaster finish.
Inside, the Rosa del Garda marble flooring — a defining element of the original house — was recovered, integrated, and polished, becoming the guiding thread of the project. On this foundation, new elements redefine the spaces and functions.
The entrance veranda has been incorporated into the main volume and transformed into the new entry. From here, one accesses the living room, where the semicircular geometry accommodates a custom-designed sofa tailored to the space. The focal point of the room is the fireplace system, set within a black gres base that also serves as a separator with the dining area. Above it, a hollow semi-column acts as a sculptural element, functional on the living side and left as a pure surface towards the entrance.
The kitchen is integrated into the living area as a continuous volume in beige lacquered panels, capable of organizing and concealing access to the pantry, the day bathroom, and the laundry, which was created from a portion of the previous entrance. The Rosa del Garda is also used for the kitchen countertop, reinforcing the material continuity of the intervention.
A corridor leads to the sleeping area, passing through a fitted wall that frames an internal window illuminated from the entrance. Here, the layout has been completely redesigned: the bedrooms and bathroom have been renovated, and a walk-in closet has been created, along with the corridor and laundry, from the footprint of the former entrance.
Oak carpentry, contemporary furnishings, and the presence of warm-toned marbles contribute to a rich and eclectic atmosphere, where natural light becomes an integral part of the project. The intense, low-angle light of Puglia highlights the plastered surfaces and materials, emphasizing the purity of the volumes and enhancing spatial depth in a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior.
