Within the mountain’s threads, we do not rewrite memory; we gently continue it—so the campus can both hold the past and inspire future learning and daily life of campus.

背景——山林校园
Background — a campus that grows with the mountain
在广州市番禺区,有一所依山而建的校园——南方学院番禺附属中学。117亩的校园里,山林占了三分之一,绿意葱茏,自然天成。但历经二十五余年时光,场地逐渐显露出岁月的痕迹:路面老旧、动线交错、户外活动空间不足、景观风貌滞后…
Located in Panyu District, Guangzhou Panyu Middle School sits against the hillside. Of the campus’s roughly 78,000 m², about one third is woodland—lush, naturally formed. After more than 25 years, traces of time have begun to show across the site: worn pavements, tangled circulation, too few outdoor activity areas, and an outdated landscape character.

如何在保留校园记忆与自然基底的同时,注入新的活力与秩序?如何将山地的限制,转化为空间的独特体验?自2023年起,BAM以“尊重与轻介入”为理念,展开了为期三年的景观改造。如今,一期与二期工程已陆续落地,校园在静谧中悄然蜕变。
How do we inject new vitality and order while preserving campus memory and its natural base? How can the constraints of a mountain site be turned into a distinctive spatial asset? Since 2023, BAM has approached this three-year landscape and façade revitalization with a philosophy of “respect and light intervention.” Phase I and Phase II have now been implemented, and the campus is quietly transforming.

Design strategy: continuing memory, translating terrain
时间的维度:让记忆成为设计的底色
一所拥有二十五余年历史的校园,其价值不仅在于建筑,更在于师生累积的生活印记与情感联结。我们的策略是 “温和的迭代” ——保留那些承载记忆的乔木、沿用墙体的原始肌理,让改造如同植物生长般自然发生。让新的元素以“生长”的方式接续旧有痕迹,形成可被阅读的时间层次。改造不是替代,而是延展。
The dimension of time — let memory be the design’s base
A campus with more than two decades of history is valuable not only for its buildings but for the life imprinted there by generations of students and teachers. Our approach is a “gentle iteration”: retain memory-bearing trees and preserve the original textures of walls so the intervention unfolds as naturally as plant growth. New elements connect to existing traces in a way that creates legible layers of time—alteration is extension, not replacement.

地形的维度:将山势转化为场景
“依山而建”是这所校园的天赋,也是最大的挑战。通过立体化的台地、平台与蜿蜒路径,将陡峭的坡地转化为一系列起伏的社交、教学、探索空间。高差不再是需要克服的障碍,而是创造了视线交流、空间围合与动态体验的契机,让山地的生命力真正注入学生的日常活动之中。
The dimension of terrain — turn slopes into scenes
“Built along the mountain” is both the campus’s gift and its challenge. Through the use of terraces, platforms and winding paths, the steep slopes has been transformed into a sequence of social, teaching, and exploratory spaces. Level changes cease to be obstacles and become opportunities for visual connection, spatial enclosure, and dynamic experience—allowing the mountain’s vitality to flow into students’ everyday lives.

不止于美观:应对复杂地形的设计思考
这是一次对山地校园的细致梳理。我们坚持:
轻干预,重保留:几乎原位保留所有乔木,延续原有墙面肌理,让新与旧自然对话。
与气候共生:为广州漫长的夏季增添遮荫,引入热带植物与局部水景,调节微气候。
分期推进,静默施工:所有工程仅在暑期进行,不打扰日常教学节奏。
(Could be deleted: More than aesthetics: design thinking for complex terrain
This is a careful rework of a hillside campus. Our commitments are:
-Light intervention, heavy preservation: nearly all mature trees remain in place; original wall textures are continued so the new and old naturally converse.
-Coexistence with climate: add shading for Guangzhou’s long summers; introduce tropical-adapted native plants and localized water features to adjust the microclimate.
-Phased, quiet construction: all works are carried out during summer breaks so daily teaching is not disrupted.

我们希望通过设计,实现几个核心目标:
拓展户外活动场景——在坡地中创造更多社交、展示、教学外延的庭院与花园。
重构高效人流动线——让人行与车行、通学与休憩,各有其道,顺畅自如。
连接社区与校园——优化接送区域,让等待成为舒适体验。
让可持续可见——选用本土材料与植物,让景观随时间“自然生长”。
Design objectives we aim to realize
-Expand outdoor activity scenarios — create more courtyards and gardens on slopes for socializing, display, and outdoor teaching.
-Rebuild efficient circulation — separate pedestrian and vehicular flows, and make each route for commute or rest smooth and distinct.
-Connect community and campus — improve drop-off and pick-up zones so waiting becomes a comfortable experience.
-Make sustainability visible — use local materials and plants so the landscape “grows” naturally over time.

一期:入口的仪式感与功能性重塑
2024年暑期,校园西大门及食堂前广场率先焕新。尝试让校园与周边社区进行更友好、更高效的对话。校园的活力与宁静,得以温和地向外延展,成为区域城市肌理中一个积极、健康的组成部分。
Phase I: remaking the entrance with ceremony and function
In summer 2024 the west gate and the canteen front plaza were the first to be refreshed. The intention was to create a friendlier, more efficient dialogue with the surrounding neighborhood. The campus’s vitality and calm were allowed to extend outward in a gentle way, making the site a positive, healthy node in the urban fabric.

大门与广场:通透与秩序之间
人行与车行分流,增设闸机,高峰时段通行更从容。
金属格栅与石材景墙错落叠合,既通透又保有仪式感。
校外广场以曲线种植池与造型松柔化边界,形成校内外温润过渡。
The gate and the plaza—between transparency and order
Pedestrian and vehicle flows are separated; access control added so peak-hour circulation is calmer.
Metal slats fence and stone walls overlap to achieve a balance of transparency and ceremony.
The exterior plaza softens its edges with curved planter and sculptural pines to form a warm transition between campus and urban street.

铺装:时间的肌理
我们采用10种不同尺寸的花岗岩,以单元重复拼贴,形成如岁月包浆般的有机缝隙。弧形花池仿佛从地面自然“生长”出来,与铺装融为一体。林下用餐区则选用碎石铺地,随性而惬意。
Paving — the texture of time
We used ten sizes of granite in repeating units to create organic gaps like a patina of time. Curved planting basins seem to “grow” out of the ground and merge with the paving. Under-tree dining areas use gravel for a relaxed, informal feel.

二期:中轴与社交空间的立体交织
2025年暑期,改造延伸至校园中轴与多个建筑衔接区域。为那些在自然中学会观察、在协作中懂得沟通、在开放空间里激发创造力的个体,创造多元的户外教学与社交场景。景观,在此成为了教育哲学的载体。
Phase II: The central axis with social spaces
In summer 2025 the renewal extended to the campus central axis and several building connections, crafting diverse outdoor teaching and social spaces for those who learn to observe in nature, to communicate through collaboration, and to stimulate creativity in open settings. Here landscape becomes a carrier of educational philosophy.

这里地形起伏更大、功能更复合。我们将一期的弧形语言纵向拉伸,转化为三维的立体种植池与台地,既消化了复杂高差,也巧妙地围合出多样的活动角落,将通行空间转变为可停留的社交场所。
Where terrain is more rugged and program more complex, we stretched the curvy language from Phase I into vertical form: three-dimensional planters and terraces that both absorb complicated level changes and artfully enclose a variety of activity space. It turning circulation spaces into places where people want to stop and stay.

其中,一个种植池被转化为静谧的水景,与置石、水生植物及几株点睛的观赏造型枫共同构成一个微型的生态群落。它围合出教学楼入口前一处宁静的过渡空间,潺潺水声与摇曳树影,在抵达教室前先平复了心绪。这处水景不仅是视觉焦点,更是调节微气候、寓教于乐的生态节点。
One planter was transformed into a quiet water feature, composed of placed stones, aquatic plants, and a few sculptural maples. It frames a tranquil transitional space in front of a teaching building. The trickle of water and shifting shadows soothe students before they enter class. This feature is both a visual focus and an ecological node that modulates microclimate and embeds learning into the landscape.

光影成为最好的装饰。植物的影子洒在干净的表面与石材铺装上,轻盈、动态,而又宁静。奔跑的少年身影掠过其间,动静相映,校园顿时生机盎然。
Light and shadow become the best ornament. Plant shadows fall on clean concrete planter and stone paving—delicate, dynamic, yet calm. The silhouettes of running students animate the scene and bring the campus to life.

铺装延续一期自然气质,改用颜色与面层各异的石材,维持细腻肌理的同时,也更适应复杂地形施工。
Paving in Phase II continues the natural character of Phase I but uses stone units with varied colors and finished to retain delicate tactility while better accommodating complex construction on slope.

不止是景观,更是教育场景的延伸
这次改造,本质是对校园公共空间的系统重构。户外空间功能上包括,学习社交区,围绕中央台地庭院,连接各教学楼,户外教学、小组讨论、静坐思考皆可发生。功能整合区,中轴与西大门区域,成为集散、展示、交通的校园“客厅”。生活区,食堂与宿舍间的庭院,成为放松、交谈的绿色港湾。
More than landscape — an extension of educational settings
This transformation is essentially a systemic reconstruction of campus public space:
-Learning & social zones: around the central terraced courtyard, linking teaching blocks so outdoor lessons, group discussions, and contemplation can occur.
-Functional integration zone: the central axis and west gate area become the campus “living room” for circulation, display, and gathering.
-Living zone: courtyards between the canteen and dormitories become green havens for relaxation and conversation.

结语——一场持续的“温和焕新”
Conclusion — A Continuous “Gentle Renewal”
校园景观从来不是一次性的作品。我们希望通过持续而慎重的介入,让这里既能承载记忆,也能激发新的相遇与学习体验。目前,三期——中央台地庭院改造也已完成图纸,将通过台地与连廊进一步连接各栋建筑,让每一层楼都能便捷步入自然。
Campus landscape is not a one-off work. Through careful, ongoing interventions we hope this place will both hold memory and spark new encounters and learning experiences.Phase III — the central terraced courtyard design drawings has been completed and will further connect buildings through terraces and covered links so that each floor can step into nature more conveniently.
