Folsom Street Addition transforms a conventional ranch house in Boulder, Colorado, into a larger, brighter home for a family of four. Designed by Taylor Architecture Studio in 2019, the project expands the original main level and adds a full second story, using generous windows, vaulted ceilings, and a more open ground-floor plan to reshape the house’s daily spaces.

About Folsom Street Addition

Folsom Street Addition begins with a familiar suburban type: the South Boulder ranch house. Taylor Architecture Studio reworks that compact structure into a two-story family home, enlarging the main level and adding nearly another full floor above it.

The result is noticeably different in both scale and character. What had been a conventional one-story residence now reads as a crisp white house with twin front-facing gables, a deep covered porch, and a dark garage door set beneath a low roofline that stretches across the front elevation.

A New Street Face

From the street, the addition gives the house a more vertical profile without losing the straightforward clarity of a residential facade. White vertical siding wraps the upper volume, while black-framed windows punctuate the exterior in a regular rhythm. Timber porch posts add warmth at the entry, and the broad lawn keeps the house set back behind a simple driveway approach.

The composition is direct rather than fussy. Two steep gables establish the new upper story, while the porch roof and garage mass hold the building close to the ground.

Open Main Floor

Inside, the ground floor shifts to an expansive shared living area that combines kitchen, dining, and sitting spaces, with a compact office also folded into the plan. The images show how that openness is reinforced by ceiling height: the main communal rooms rise to a vaulted profile, giving the enlarged floor a sense of reach that the original ranch almost certainly lacked.

Large black-framed windows and glazed doors draw the backyard into these rooms. The living area sits beneath a high white ceiling with a large ceiling fan, while the dining space occupies the center of the plan with clear views across the room. Light wood flooring runs continuously through the space, helping tie the different functions together.

Kitchen and Windows

The kitchen makes the project’s emphasis on light especially clear. A long run of horizontal windows stretches above the counters, and additional glazing at the end wall brings in more daylight. Dark lower cabinetry grounds the room, while white counters, white walls, and globe pendants keep the space bright.

An island with bar seating anchors the kitchen without closing it off from the dining area beyond. The room feels practical and open, with sightlines carried across multiple windows rather than interrupted by upper cabinets.

Upper Rooms

The new upper level contains three bedrooms, and the bedrooms shown in the images follow the same spatial strategy as the main floor. Cathedral-style ceilings create height, while sparsely detailed white walls and black-trimmed windows keep the rooms calm and spare. The bathroom continues that language with a glass shower enclosure, a double vanity in warm wood, and round mirrors under soft wall lighting.

Throughout the house, the renovation stays focused on space and daylight. Rather than treating the addition as a separate gesture, the project uses the second floor, the open main level, and the enlarged window openings to turn a modest ranch into a house with a much broader interior reach.
